A pastoral cultural event held in Me’uruma Township of Ngawa County in China has brought renewed vitality to the Mandala Grassland by linking local traditions, livestock products and the rural economy.

The 2026 Me’uruma Pastoral Cultural Event was held as scheduled on the Mandala Grassland in August.

The second day of the programme featured a series of competitions focusing on practical livestock-farming skills and physical strength. Events including milking, weightlifting, traditional animal riding and tug-of-war attracted considerable interest from participants and spectators.

Jigme Tso, a herder from Serdeu Village in Me’uruma Township, secured first place in the milking competition.

She expressed hope that similar cultural activities directly connected to the daily lives, traditions and production practices of pastoral communities would continue to be organized in the future.

Konchok Palden of Mowaru Village won first place in the weightlifting competition. He said he was delighted with the achievement and hoped that similar platforms would continue to be created for local people to demonstrate their talent and traditional skills.

Alongside the cultural and sporting competitions, an exhibition and sales area for livestock products was also established at the venue.

Locally produced specialty goods derived from yaks, cattle and sheep were displayed and sold. The large number of spectators and visitors provided local herders with an opportunity to market their products and increase their incomes.

Organizers said the event sought to explore a new development model for pastoral areas by attracting visitors through cultural activities and converting that interest into higher local earnings.

The programme brought together the preservation of traditional culture, the expansion of markets for local products and the improvement of incomes among pastoral households.

Township and village-level officials also used the large public gathering to explain government policies and public-benefit programmes relevant to local residents.

Officials held direct discussions with residents to better understand their needs and concerns while strengthening ties between local authorities and the community.

The event not only showcased the culture and lifestyle of pastoral communities but also helped connect local products with wider markets, promote rural income growth and strengthen the foundations of grassroots governance in pastoral areas.
