The idea of transforming Nepal into a \u201cdynamic bridge\u201d between China and South Asia has once again moved to the center of national debate. On Friday, Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, addressing an international conference on China and South Asia in a multipolar world, reiterated the government\u2019s aspiration to move Nepal beyond the limitations of being landlocked and develop it into a vibrant and dynamic bridge linking China with South Asia.<\/p>\n

The aspiration is welcome. But the concept itself is not new. Successive governments have spoken of converting Nepal\u2019s distinctive geography into an opportunity for economic connectivity, trade, transit and cooperation between China and India. The real problem has never been the idea. It has been implementation. Nepal must now move beyond repeatedly describing the potential of becoming a bridge and begin demonstrating tangible results.<\/p>\n

There are some encouraging signs in the regional environment. This week, China and India held the 36th meeting of the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination on border affairs in New Delhi. Both sides reiterated that maintaining peace and stability along the border is important for the overall development of bilateral relations.<\/p>\n

Every positive step toward dialogue, border management and confidence-building between China and India matters to Nepal as well. Greater stability between its two giant neighbors can create additional opportunities for Nepal in economic connectivity, energy, trade, tourism and transit.<\/p>\n

Recent progress in Nepal\u2013India energy cooperation offers an important example. At a bilateral energy secretary-level meeting, the two countries agreed to expand cross-border electricity flow capacity through the Dhalkebar\u2013Muzaffarpur and Dhalkebar\u2013Sitamarhi transmission systems, raising Nepal\u2019s electricity export capacity to India from 1,100 megawatts to 1,650 megawatts and import capacity from India from 1,000 megawatts to 1,400 megawatts.<\/p>\n

This is not merely about buying and selling electricity. If Nepal can systematically integrate hydropower generation, transmission infrastructure and regional energy markets, energy itself could become one of the principal foundations of Nepal\u2019s regional economic role.<\/p>\n

Efforts are also underway to advance cross-border electricity transmission infrastructure toward China. Progress on the Chilime\u2013Kerung transmission line is important for extending Nepal\u2019s energy connectivity northward. If the required technical, economic and political conditions are created in the future, such infrastructure could also strengthen the prospects for broader regional energy cooperation.<\/p>\n

Nepal, however, should not rush to proclaim trilateral energy trade before strengthening its own generation, domestic transmission capacity, cross-border infrastructure and market mechanisms. The central challenge is to convert potential into strategy, and strategy into implementation.<\/p>\n

The same principle applies to trade and transit infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The Rani\u2013Biratnagar\u2013Khandbari\u2013Kimathanka road network under the Koshi Corridor demonstrates the significant potential for developing a short north\u2013south trade link connecting India and China through Nepal. Although the basic road alignment has been opened, substantial work remains before it can function as a reliable international trade route. Road upgrading, border infrastructure, modern customs facilities, warehousing, transport services and all-weather operation will all be necessary.<\/p>\n

A line on a map does not, by itself, create an economic corridor.<\/p>\n

A corridor becomes meaningful when farmers can reach new markets, industries gain access to raw materials and consumers, trade time and costs are reduced, tourists can travel more easily and local communities receive direct economic benefits.<\/p>\n

Nepal\u2019s concept of a \u201cdynamic bridge\u201d must therefore extend far beyond roads and transit. Its real scope should include energy, trade, manufacturing, agriculture, tourism, technology, digital connectivity, education, research and people-to-people relations.<\/p>\n

Electricity generated in Nepal should reach regional markets. Nepali agricultural and industrial products should gain easier access to markets both north and south. Chinese and Indian investment should be attracted into sectors that generate production, employment, technology transfer and exports within Nepal.<\/p>\n

Trans-Himalayan tourism can be linked with the wider Indian subcontinent. Nepali universities can be connected with Chinese and Indian universities and research institutions to promote joint work in science, agriculture, health, climate, Himalayan studies and technology.<\/p>\n

At the center of all such cooperation, however, must remain Nepal\u2019s national interest.<\/p>\n

For Nepal to become a bridge does not mean becoming part of any power\u2019s sphere of influence. Relations with China should not be defined against India. Relations with India should not be framed as a strategy against China. Nor should Nepal\u2019s relations with other friendly countries become a platform to be used against either neighbor.<\/p>\n

Nepal\u2019s sovereignty is not a negotiable commodity within any geopolitical equation.<\/p>\n

Nepal must firmly preserve its sovereign right to expand relations with all countries while pursuing cooperation based on mutual respect, equality and mutual benefit. Such balance can serve as the foundation of both Nepal\u2019s geopolitical security and its economic opportunity.<\/p>\n

But another misconception must also be abandoned.<\/p>\n

Nepal will not automatically become a \u201cdynamic bridge\u201d simply because it lies between two giant economies. Geography creates opportunity, not outcomes.<\/p>\n

To transform that opportunity into economic strength, Nepal needs quality infrastructure, policy stability, modern customs systems, reliable energy networks, capable administration, legal certainty, an investment-friendly environment and a long-term national strategy.<\/p>\n

This is where Nepal\u2019s principal weakness remains visible.<\/p>\n

Many strategically important projects are announced. Agreements are signed. Studies are conducted. Foundation stones are laid. But implementation often slows soon afterward.<\/p>\n

Political change frequently alters priorities. Coordination among ministries remains weak. Institutional memory is fragile. Decision-making is slow. Public investment management is often ineffective. These problems are compounded by limitations in technical capacity within the bureaucracy, insufficient engineering manpower, weak project management, inadequate financing mechanisms and persistent questions over construction quality.<\/p>\n

The success of projects of national importance should not depend on the tenure of a particular minister or government.<\/p>\n

The \u201cdynamic bridge\u201d concept must therefore be defined not as a political slogan that changes with governments, but as a long-term national economic strategy.<\/p>\n

Clear priorities should be established for north\u2013south economic corridors. Roads, railways, energy transmission, digital connectivity and trade infrastructure linking Nepal with China and India should not be treated as isolated projects, but as components of an integrated national connectivity strategy.<\/p>\n

The timeline of every strategic project should be made public. Progress at every stage should be regularly monitored. Reasons for delays should be disclosed. Responsible agencies should be clearly identified. Institutional mechanisms must be created to ensure accountability for unnecessary delay or failure.<\/p>\n

Preparing a plan is not an achievement.<\/p>\n

Signing an agreement is not the final measure of success.<\/p>\n

Success begins when citizens can see and feel the results.<\/p>\n

If north\u2013south roads provide farmers with access to new markets, that is success.<\/p>\n

If electricity trade increases national income and encourages investment in productive sectors, that is success.<\/p>\n

If regional investment creates quality employment for young people within Nepal, that is success.<\/p>\n

If tourism revitalizes local economies, that is success.<\/p>\n

If connectivity infrastructure reduces industrial costs and makes Nepali products more competitive, that is the real meaning of a \u201cdynamic bridge.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Nepal\u2019s geography is not merely its destiny. With the right policies, balanced diplomacy, capable institutions and modern infrastructure, the same geography can become a major source of national economic strength.<\/p>\n

But from now on, action must matter more than words.<\/p>\n

Calling Nepal a bridge is not enough.<\/p>\n

Drawing the bridge on a map is not enough.<\/p>\n

Nepal must become the bridge\u2014and deliver results.<\/p>\n
