Nepal Oil Corporation has increased imports and distribution of liquefied petroleum gas in an effort to ease shortages reported in Kathmandu Valley and several other parts of the country. The corporation says sales and distribution are expected to return to normal within a week.<\/p>\n

According to the corporation, more than 100 LPG bullet tankers are currently being loaded each day from Indian Oil Corporation refineries. With higher import volumes, market supply has gradually begun to improve.<\/p>\n

Binitmani Upadhyay, director of the LPG Department at Nepal Oil Corporation, said distribution conditions were moving toward normal and urged consumers not to stock more cylinders than necessary.<\/p>\n

The corporation resumed the sale of full 14.2 kilogram cylinders from the end of Asar. Before that, it had introduced a system allowing only 7.1 kilogram half cylinders to be sold from Falgun 29, citing concerns over possible supply disruptions arising from conflict and instability in West Asia.<\/p>\n

According to the corporation, the return to full cylinder sales triggered a sudden surge in demand, placing additional pressure on the distribution system.<\/p>\n

Krishnabhakta Shrestha, president of the LPG Industry Association, said consumers had shown limited interest in half cylinders and many had delayed purchases while waiting for full cylinders to become available again. As a result, demand rose sharply once regular full cylinder sales resumed.<\/p>\n

Import figures also show that LPG supplies have increased during the current month.<\/p>\n

Nepal Oil Corporation said 44,318 metric tons of LPG were imported in Shrawan of the previous fiscal year. Imports during the current Shrawan are projected to reach around 55,000 metric tons.<\/p>\n

A total of 39,774 metric tons of LPG had already entered Nepal during the first 22 days of the month, according to the corporation.<\/p>\n

With demand expected to rise further during the upcoming major festivals, the government is also pursuing diplomatic discussions with India to increase Nepal\u2019s LPG import quota for three months, according to Minister for Industry, Commerce and Supplies Gaurikumari Yadav.<\/p>\n

There are currently 58 LPG industries operating in Nepal, with a combined storage capacity of 10,166 metric tons.<\/p>\n

Minister Yadav and senior officials of Nepal Oil Corporation have also intensified market inspections in response to concerns over shortages and distribution.<\/p>\n

On Saturday, a government team inspected Nepal Gas Industry in Balaju as well as several LPG sales outlets in the Teku area.<\/p>\n

Nepal Oil Corporation said the inspections did not find evidence of artificial shortages or black market activity.<\/p>\n

The corporation has also formed a quick response team to address complaints from consumers unable to obtain LPG. More than 500 complaints have been handled so far, according to the corporation.<\/p>\n

Although imports have increased, pressure on the distribution system has not yet been fully resolved because of the sudden rise in demand for full cylinders. Nepal Oil Corporation expects supply and distribution to return to normal conditions within the coming week.<\/p>\n
