At the centre of the story is 22-year-old local herder Sonam Jigme, who transformed his own cattle pen into a makeshift football pitch so that children in the village could play more safely. Rather than receiving formal coaching, he learned football skills by repeatedly watching online videos and studying techniques frame by frame before passing them on to the children.<\/p>\n

Every weekend, some children walk as far as 10 kilometres to take part in the matches. Even the names of their tournaments reflect the simplicity and warmth of the community. Depending on whatever prize Sonam can offer from home, the competition may be called the \u201cCabbage Cup,\u201d the \u201cWatermelon Cup\u201d or the \u201cTeapot Cup.\u201d The prizes and names may change, but the enthusiasm for the game remains constant.

After Sonam began sharing videos of their football activities online, support started arriving from different parts of China. Donors have sent football boots, kits, protective equipment and other supplies. With that support, the dusty makeshift pitch is gradually improving.<\/p>\n

According to the available information, the region now has 1,136 football pitches, while 13 schools were designated as national youth football schools in 2025, indicating wider efforts to expand access to the sport among children and young people in high-altitude communities.<\/p>\n
