China\u2019s new-energy vehicle market reached a new milestone in July 2026, with NEVs accounting for more than 60 percent of monthly new vehicle sales for the first time. Their cumulative share of total vehicle sales during the first seven months of the year also exceeded 50 percent.<\/p>\n

According to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, more than 1.57 million NEVs were produced in July, while sales exceeded 1.56 million units. This represented year-on-year increases of 26.8 percent in production and 23.7 percent in sales.<\/p>\n

Among NEVs, both production and sales of pure electric vehicles surpassed 1 million units in July, with each rising by more than 30 percent compared with the same period last year.<\/p>\n

From January to July, China produced 9.01 million NEVs and sold around 9 million units, with both figures increasing by nearly 10 percent year on year.<\/p>\n

The broader automobile market, however, recorded a slight slowdown in July. Total vehicle production stood at 2.57 million units, while sales reached 2.58 million, both edging down on monthly and annual bases.<\/p>\n

Chen Shihua, deputy secretary-general of the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers, said July is traditionally a relatively slow period for vehicle sales. He noted that demand had partly been brought forward during the first-half sales push, while prolonged high temperatures, typhoons and flooding in some regions also weighed on market performance.<\/p>\n

Vehicle exports, meanwhile, maintained strong growth. China exported more than 1.04 million vehicles in July, up 81.3 percent from a year earlier. NEV exports rose by around 1.5 times to 553,000 units, accounting for more than half of total vehicle exports for the second consecutive month.<\/p>\n

During the January-July period, China exported 6.14 million vehicles, an increase of 66.8 percent year on year. Of these, 2.91 million were NEVs, representing growth of around 1.2 times compared with the same period last year.<\/p>\n

Persistently high oil prices have increased the operating costs of conventional fuel-powered vehicles, strengthening the economic appeal of NEVs. At the same time, Chinese manufacturers have continued to improve vehicle safety, driving range and overall technological performance through increased research and development investment.<\/p>\n

A broader range of models across different price segments and consumer needs has also helped expand market demand.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s charging infrastructure is growing rapidly as well. According to the National Energy Administration, the number of electric vehicle charging facilities nationwide reached 23.06 million by the end of June, an increase of 43.2 percent year on year.<\/p>\n

Under an action plan for carbon peaking during the 15th Five-Year Plan period from 2026 to 2030, China aims to raise the share of NEVs in the country\u2019s total vehicle fleet to around 30 percent by 2030.<\/p>\n
