Nepali social drama \u201cGauthali\u201d has maintained a strong theatrical presence into its fourth week, emerging as the highest-grossing Nepali film of 2026 so far and demonstrating the commercial potential of locally rooted social storytelling.<\/p>\n

According to the latest available box-office figures, the film has generated Rs 197.1 million in gross theatrical revenue in Nepal, with 715,198 cinema admissions recorded during the period.<\/p>\n

Released on July 17, \u201cGauthali\u201d remains in cinemas across Nepal, an unusually sustained performance for a film driven less by major stars or aggressive promotion than by audience response and word of mouth.<\/p>\n

Directed by Dr Kapil Rijal, the film is based on a story by veteran physician and lyricist Dr Bhola Rijal. Arun Chhetri and Simran Khadka lead the cast alongside Madan Krishna Shrestha, Prakash Ghimire, Lunibha Tuladhar, Rabindra Jha, Ishwori Baral, Sanyog Rasaili, Sita Devi Timilsina, Laxminath Timilsina and Rajendra Nepali.<\/p>\n

The film addresses child marriage, restrictions on girls\u2019 education, women\u2019s autonomy, family relationships and social attitudes toward people with disabilities.<\/p>\n

At the centre of the narrative is Gauthali, a young woman whose childhood and educational opportunities are constrained by traditional social expectations. Her attempt to reclaim control over her education and future provides the emotional foundation of the story.<\/p>\n

Arun Chhetri\u2019s portrayal of Thule has also attracted attention. Rather than reducing a differently abled character to an object of sympathy, the film uses the character to explore dignity, compassion, social prejudice and selfless human relationships.<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s social message has extended beyond cinemas. The National Association of Rural Municipalities in Nepal recently honoured director Kapil Rijal, actor Arun Chhetri and actress Simran Khadka, recognising the film\u2019s potential contribution to public awareness concerning child marriage and the treatment of people with disabilities.<\/p>\n

The title \u201cGauthali\u201d itself carries a history in Nepali cinema. Around two decades ago, Dr Bhola Rijal produced an earlier film under the same name, which completed a successful 51-day theatrical run. His son Kapil Rijal has now revived the title for a new generation with a different story and contemporary social concerns.<\/p>\n

The success of the new \u201cGauthali\u201d also carries a broader message for Nepal\u2019s film industry. Audiences appear willing to support films without conventional star power when the story establishes a strong connection with lived social realities.<\/p>\n

With more than 715,000 admissions, box-office revenue above Rs 197 million and a theatrical run extending into its fourth week, \u201cGauthali\u201d has become not only one of the major commercial successes of the year but also a notable example of how socially grounded Nepali cinema can connect with a mass audience.<\/p>\n
