Several political and civic groups in Taiwan have expressed concern over what they describe as Japan\u2019s growing military role in regional affairs, warning that such a trend could affect peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and East Asia.<\/p>\n

The concerns were raised at forums, seminars and public gatherings held in Taipei and Taichung on Friday and Saturday to mark the 81st anniversary of Japan\u2019s surrender in World War II.<\/p>\n

At a forum in Taipei, more than 10 organizations, including the Reunification Alliance Party, brought together scholars and experts from both sides of the Taiwan Strait, as well as participants from the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Japan and Australia.<\/p>\n

Participants called for lessons to be drawn from the history of World War II, opposition to what they described as expansionist tendencies among Japanese right-wing forces, and efforts to safeguard peace and stability in East Asia.<\/p>\n

Wang Yung, president of the Reunification Alliance Party, cited earlier remarks by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and argued that they suggested the possibility of Japanese military involvement in Taiwan-related affairs.<\/p>\n

He also accused Japan of seeking to loosen constraints associated with its post-war pacifist constitutional framework and its long-standing policy of maintaining an exclusively defense-oriented posture.<\/p>\n

A separate seminar was held on Saturday in Taichung, bringing together more than 30 descendants of resistance fighters who opposed Japanese aggression, as well as historians, teachers and students.<\/p>\n

Li Su-hui, daughter of anti-Japanese resistance fighter Li Tsang-chiang, said her family continued to carry painful memories of Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan from 1895 to 1945.<\/p>\n

She said remembering history was not only about honoring earlier generations, but also about passing the spirit of resistance to younger generations. She also expressed concern over what she described as the growing influence of right-wing forces in Japan.<\/p>\n

Another descendant of an anti-Japanese resistance fighter, Shaw Kai-ping, warned about what he viewed as the possible revival of Japanese militarism as well as growing separatist political tendencies in Taiwan.<\/p>\n

On Friday, several civic groups, including the Reunification Alliance Party and the Labor Party, also staged a protest outside the Japan-Taiwan Exchange Association in Taipei.<\/p>\n

Labor Party Chairman Wu Jung-yuan referred to the heavy human cost of Japan\u2019s war against China and the 50 years of Japanese colonial rule in Taiwan, arguing that the historical experience should not be forgotten.<\/p>\n

Participants in the events also voiced opposition to external interference, called for peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait, and expressed support for Chinese national reunification.<\/p>\n

These views, however, represent the positions of particular political and civic groups in Taiwan. Different political perspectives and significant disagreements remain within Taiwan over its future, Japan\u2019s regional security role and cross-Strait relations.<\/p>\n
