Reports that the United States has lost at least 45 MQ-9 Reaper unmanned aerial vehicles during the war with Iran have raised questions over the battlefield effectiveness of expensive strike and reconnaissance drones, according to Russian military expert Alexander Stepanov.<\/p>\n

Speaking to TASS, Stepanov, an expert at the Institute of Law and National Security, said the losses highlighted the vulnerability of high-cost unmanned systems when operating against an adversary equipped with modern air defense capabilities.<\/p>\n

He argued that the loss of such a large number of MQ-9 Reapers carries strategic significance because it challenges the economic and military logic of relying heavily on expensive strike and reconnaissance drones in contested airspace.<\/p>\n

However, available reporting does not confirm that all 45 MQ-9s lost during the Iran conflict were shot down by Iranian air defenses. Some were reportedly lost after communications failures and subsequent crashes, meaning the total should not automatically be treated as confirmed Iranian shootdowns.<\/p>\n

The MQ-9 Reaper is a long-endurance unmanned aircraft used by the United States for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and precision strike missions.<\/p>\n

Stepanov said the latest losses suggest that large, relatively slow unmanned aircraft can become increasingly vulnerable in environments protected by capable air defense systems.<\/p>\n

He also argued that the experience could intensify debate over the cost-effectiveness of sophisticated unmanned platforms compared with cheaper and more expendable drone systems.<\/p>\n

According to Stepanov, lessons from the conflict may also be significant for the US defense industry, particularly as future unmanned aircraft are assessed not only by their technological sophistication and payload capacity, but also by their survivability and cost-effectiveness in heavily contested combat environments.<\/p>\n
