Mike J. Harker, Public Affairs Chief at the U.S. Embassy in Kathmandu, has visited several Buddhist and cultural heritage sites in Upper Mustang that have received U.S. assistance for conservation and restoration.<\/p>\n

After attending the inauguration of the Monchoe Antique Museum established with U.S. Embassy support at Chode Monastery in Lo Manthang, Harker travelled to Lo Ghyakar, also known as Ghar Gompa, as well as Dzong Gompa and Gonpa Gang.<\/p>\n

According to the U.S. Embassy, Harker and members of his delegation met religious and local leaders associated with the monasteries and received updates on ongoing conservation and restoration work. The delegation later returned to Jomsom.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Embassy has been providing financial assistance for the conservation of religious, historical and cultural heritage sites in Mustang through the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation. The programme has supported the restoration of monasteries, historic structures, wall paintings and other cultural materials.<\/p>\n

Around US$285,000 in U.S. assistance was provided for the conservation and restoration of Lo Ghyakar Monastery. The project included structural restoration, preservation of archaeological and cultural materials, and measures aimed at reducing earthquake-related risks.<\/p>\n

U.S. assistance has also been used for the restoration of Dzong Gompa and the conservation of its historic wall paintings. Gonpa Gang has similarly received support for structural strengthening and the preservation of traditional architectural features.<\/p>\n

The Monchoe Antique Museum at Chode Monastery has been established to preserve and display local religious, historical and cultural materials. Those associated with the project expect the museum to contribute to heritage preservation, research, tourism and the transfer of cultural knowledge to younger generations.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Embassy has supported cultural heritage preservation projects in different parts of Nepal for more than two decades. These initiatives have included archaeological sites, religious monuments, historic buildings, traditional artworks and other forms of cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

Lo Ghyakar Monastery recently also attracted public attention in connection with a proposed design for Nepal\u2019s one-rupee coin. A proposal to feature an image of the monastery on the coin generated controversy over the design, after which the proposal was reportedly reviewed.<\/p>\n

Harker had previously visited Lo Ghyakar after restoration work at the monastery was completed. Former U.S. Ambassador Dean R. Thompson also visited the monastery during his tenure.<\/p>\n

The U.S. Embassy has presented the latest visit as part of its engagement with cultural heritage preservation, interaction with local communities and review of projects supported through U.S. assistance. No publicly available information has linked the visit to any purpose beyond cultural preservation activities.<\/p>\n
