As Russian missile attacks intensify, Britain, France and Germany, along with other major European countries, have pledged to increase military assistance aimed at strengthening Ukraine\u2019s air defense capabilities.<\/p>\n

During a meeting of the \u201cCoalition of the Willing\u201d held in Kyiv on Monday to mark Ukraine\u2019s 35th Independence Day, British Prime Minister Andy Burnham, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz joined Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in leading discussions on additional support. European Council President Antonio Costa and other European leaders also participated, either in person or virtually.<\/p>\n

The meeting prioritized the delivery of additional air defense systems and missiles, deeper cooperation with Ukraine\u2019s defense industry, and increased economic pressure on Russia. European leaders also agreed on the need to strengthen protection and repair work for Ukraine\u2019s energy infrastructure ahead of the coming winter.<\/p>\n

Britain has also agreed to provide important technical assistance to help Ukraine develop its own long-range missile production capacity. The British government has authorized defense company MBDA to share classified technical information related to British components used in SCALP long-range missiles with France and Ukraine. The move is expected to help create conditions for future assembly and production of such missiles inside Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Moscow has strongly criticized the decision. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said such assistance would further fuel the conflict. Russia has also warned that facilities established in Ukraine for the production of long-range missiles could be treated as potential military targets.<\/p>\n

Ukraine says it is facing a serious shortage of interceptor missiles used by the U.S.-made Patriot air defense system. According to Zelensky, Ukraine received 675 Patriot interceptors in 2023, but the number fell to 364 in 2025. He said Ukraine expects to receive only about 264 in 2026 and needs at least 300 additional interceptors to strengthen its defenses before winter.<\/p>\n

France has also pledged to accelerate the supply of air defense equipment and missiles. Macron has argued that European allies need to increase deliveries of interceptor missiles to help Ukraine counter Russian ballistic missile attacks.<\/p>\n

Long-range strikes by both Russia and Ukraine have intensified in recent weeks. Ukraine has expanded drone attacks against Russian oil refineries, industrial facilities and logistics centers. Several logistics facilities operated by Russian e-commerce company Ozon have also reportedly been affected. Russian authorities say civilians have been killed in some of the attacks.<\/p>\n

Russia, meanwhile, has stepped up ballistic missile and drone strikes against Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. Moscow says it is targeting military and war-related facilities, while Ukraine and its European allies accuse Russia of striking civilian and critical infrastructure.<\/p>\n

As the war moves deeper into its fifth year, shortages in air defense capacity have emerged as one of Ukraine\u2019s most serious military vulnerabilities. At the same time, European moves to support local production of long-range missiles suggest that assistance to Kyiv is gradually shifting from weapons deliveries alone toward building Ukraine\u2019s own defense-industrial capacity.<\/p>\n
