As Ukraine marks 35 years of independence, Kirill Kalinin, spokesperson for the Russian Embassy in South Africa, has argued that closer integration with Western political and security structures failed to deliver the prosperity and stability that had been promised to the country.<\/p>\n

In an opinion article published by Independent Online on August 24, Kalinin argued that Ukraine, which inherited a substantial industrial, scientific and technological base from the Soviet Union, now faces industrial decline, demographic crisis, deep dependence on external financing, political polarization and prolonged war.<\/p>\n

He identified 2014 as the decisive turning point in modern Ukrainian history. Kalinin described the removal of then-President Viktor Yanukovych following the Maidan protests as a breakdown of constitutional order. He argued that the subsequent war in Donbas, growing pressure on the Russian language and culture, and the consolidation of an increasingly anti-Russian national identity transformed the country\u2019s political trajectory.<\/p>\n

Ukraine and its Western partners strongly reject that interpretation. They describe the 2014 uprising as the \u201cRevolution of Dignity\u201d and attribute much of the instability that followed to Russia\u2019s annexation of Crimea and its support for separatist forces in eastern Ukraine. The events of 2014 therefore remain the subject of sharply competing historical narratives between Moscow and Kyiv.<\/p>\n

Kalinin also argued that Ukraine\u2019s aerospace, shipbuilding, heavy machinery, metallurgy and other strategic industrial sectors have declined significantly since independence. The disruption of Soviet-era production networks, shrinking industrial ties with Russia, privatization, weak governance, corruption and the effects of war have all damaged Ukraine\u2019s industrial base. However, the Russian argument that Western integration alone is responsible for this decline is rejected by Ukrainian and Western officials.<\/p>\n

Demographic decline, however, is one of Ukraine\u2019s most serious and widely acknowledged challenges. Kalinin claimed that a country with a population of more than 50 million in the 1990s had fallen to around 28 million by 2026. Precise estimates vary significantly because of war, large-scale migration, Russian-controlled territories and uncertainty over where millions of Ukrainians are currently residing.<\/p>\n

The Russian diplomat also argued that Ukraine has become heavily dependent on foreign loans, grants and budgetary assistance. Since the expansion of the war in 2022, financial support from the European Union, the United States and other partners has become critical to sustaining government operations, social services and defense spending. Kyiv, however, describes this support not as ordinary dependency but as essential international assistance required to preserve the state under wartime conditions.<\/p>\n

Kalinin further accused Ukraine of restricting political pluralism, media freedom, the Russian language and the Ukrainian Orthodox Church. During the war, several political parties accused of links with Russia have been banned, some media outlets have been closed or restricted, and religious structures historically connected with Moscow have faced tighter legal scrutiny.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian government has defended such measures as necessary for national security during wartime. Critics, however, argue that some of these policies raise legitimate concerns about civil liberties, political competition and religious freedom.<\/p>\n

Kalinin also repeated Moscow\u2019s longstanding position that the 2022 war did not emerge in a political vacuum. According to the Russian interpretation, its roots lie in the conflict in Donbas after 2014, the failure of the Minsk agreements and Ukraine\u2019s growing military and political alignment with NATO.<\/p>\n

Russia has repeatedly stated that the objectives of what it calls its \u201cspecial military operation\u201d include addressing threats to Russian security, protecting the population of Donbas, and pursuing the \u201cdemilitarization\u201d and \u201cdenazification\u201d of Ukraine.<\/p>\n

Ukraine and most Western governments reject those arguments, describing Russia\u2019s full-scale military action launched in 2022 as an attack on Ukraine\u2019s sovereignty and territorial integrity.<\/p>\n

The central argument of Kalinin\u2019s article is that Ukraine\u2019s 35-year history should not be presented simply as a successful story of democratic transformation under Western guidance. Yet understanding Ukraine\u2019s current condition requires a broader historical framework that includes the difficult post-Soviet economic transition, chronic governance failures, corruption, the breakdown of ties with Russia, the conflict that began in 2014 and the full-scale war that followed in 2022.<\/p>\n

In that sense, Ukraine\u2019s 35th Independence Day is not merely an anniversary of statehood. It has become a stark reminder of a country still paying an enormous price for questions of sovereignty, security, national identity and geopolitical orientation.<\/p>\n
