The 25th Meeting of the Special Representatives on the India-China Boundary Question was held in Beijing on August 25 and co-chaired by India\u2019s National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee.

The two sides positively reviewed the ongoing improvement in bilateral relations and said the current momentum was in line with the vision and directions of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping.<\/p>\n

The talks covered a broad range of issues, including ways to expand bilateral cooperation, maintain peace and tranquility along the border, improve border management, make progress on boundary delimitation and continue work on transboundary cooperation.<\/p>\n

Both sides emphasized that peace and stability in the border areas remain an essential foundation for the steady development of overall India-China relations.<\/p>\n

The Special Representatives also discussed strengthening existing dialogue mechanisms, improving communication and coordination along the border, building mutual confidence and reducing the risk of future tensions.<\/p>\n

The talks indicated that the boundary process is increasingly moving beyond immediate crisis management toward longer-term political discussions on delimitation and an eventual settlement.<\/p>\n

Cross-border exchanges were also part of the discussions. Efforts to facilitate the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, border trade and other forms of movement and contact have become an important component of the wider normalization process.<\/p>\n

India-China relations had deteriorated sharply after the 2020 Galwan Valley clash, which triggered a prolonged military standoff at several points along the Line of Actual Control.<\/p>\n

In the years that followed, military and diplomatic negotiations gradually reduced tensions in some sensitive sectors, while agreements on patrolling and disengagement helped reopen high-level political dialogue.<\/p>\n

The Special Representatives process is important because it goes beyond routine military-level border management. It was created to explore the broader political framework necessary for an eventual settlement of the boundary question.<\/p>\n

The 25th meeting did not resolve the territorial dispute, and fundamental differences over sensitive border areas remain.<\/p>\n

However, the expansion of discussions from military de-escalation toward boundary delimitation, political understanding and broader bilateral cooperation represents a significant development in the relationship.<\/p>\n

The Doval-Wang meeting also demonstrated a shared political interest in preserving the current momentum, managing disagreements within a controlled framework and expanding areas of cooperation.<\/p>\n
