BRICS, the joint platform of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has already established itself as a decisive force in the global economy and geopolitical equation. Addressing the need for a multipolar world order, this platform has been representing the voice of developing and emerging economies on the international stage. For a country like Nepal, which is landlocked, developing and carries geopolitical sensitivity, BRICS cooperation holds deep meaning. This article has been prepared from a positive perspective in favor of BRICS, and it analyzes the dimensions of Nepal\u2013China relations, regional stability and multilateral cooperation.<\/p>\n

Western financial institutions, namely the World Bank, the IMF and the Asian Development Bank, have for decades maintained dominance over the economic policy making of developing countries. But the rise of BRICS has challenged this monopoly and provided financial autonomy to developing countries through alternative financial structures, namely the New Development Bank and the Contingent Reserve Arrangement. The participation of powerful economies such as China, India and Russia has established BRICS as a representative platform of the Global South. This platform advances the shared agenda of developing countries on issues such as climate finance, trade balance, technology transfer and sustainable development.<\/p>\n

Although Nepal is not a member of BRICS, it can benefit from its cooperation framework. China and India are both BRICS members and both are Nepal’s two largest trading partners. The economic integration of BRICS can open new doors for Nepal in investment, infrastructure development, energy trade and technology transfer. The spirit of BRICS aligns with the Belt and Road Initiative. Under it, Nepal has been cooperating with China on railways, highways, hydropower and digital infrastructure. BRICS summits give further strength to such connectivity projects. Nepal’s foreign policy is based on balanced relations. A multilateral platform like BRICS gives Nepal the opportunity to cooperate with all sides without falling under the influence of any single power. This strengthens Nepal’s strategic autonomy.<\/p>\n

China is Nepal’s northern neighbor and historical friend. This relationship, based on the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and mutual respect, aligns with the values of BRICS. Under infrastructure and energy cooperation, remarkable progress is being made in the feasibility study of the Kerung\u2013Kathmandu railway, hydropower export and transmission lines, the Syaphrubesi\u2013Rasuwa Gadhi highway, and fiber optic and telecommunications. The effects of climate change in the Himalayan region, namely glacial lake outburst floods, flooding and landslides, are shared challenges for both Nepal and China. The BRICS platform encourages cooperation in climate finance, early warning systems and scientific research. This strengthens Nepal’s Loss and Damage agenda on the international stage.<\/p>\n

Some Western powers and their supporting groups have been attempting to portray BRICS as anti-China or anti-West. But this perspective is misleading. During the BRICS Summit, some Tibetan groups and Western-funded media outlets attempted to run anti-China public opinion campaigns. But the Nepali people have not accepted such external pressure. Nepal’s independent foreign policy and the awareness of its people have not allowed such campaigns to succeed. It is a positive step that the Nepal government has advanced institutional initiatives in climate justice, disaster management and reconstruction. The Prime Minister’s preparation to raise the issue of climate justice at the United Nations General Assembly enhances Nepal’s international credibility. This is an example of a multilateral institutional initiative rather than bilateral pressure, which aligns with the spirit of BRICS.<\/p>\n

The BRICS Summit is not merely a diplomatic event but a symbol of a multipolar world order. For Nepal, this is a great opportunity for economic development, infrastructure construction, climate cooperation and geopolitical balance. The China\u2013Nepal relationship is deep on historical, cultural and economic grounds. BRICS can make this relationship even stronger. But Nepal’s independence, sovereignty and the interests of its people must remain paramount. It would be appropriate for Nepal to cooperate on the basis of its national interest without falling victim to external pressure or illusion. The positive aspect of BRICS is precisely this, that it is a platform for balance of power, cooperation and shared prosperity. Nepal can embrace it and advance its development journey.<\/p>\n
