Three hundred and five years have passed since Russia and Sweden signed the Treaty of Nystad on September 10, 1721, bringing the Great Northern War of 1700\u20131721 to an end and securing Russia\u2019s access to the Baltic Sea. Russia\u2019s Foreign Ministry has commemorated the anniversary as a major turning point in the country\u2019s emergence as a leading European power.<\/p>\n

The Treaty of Nystad is regarded as one of the most significant military, political and diplomatic achievements of Peter I, later known as Peter the Great. The settlement concluded more than two decades of confrontation in the Baltic region and fundamentally changed the balance of power in Northern Europe.<\/p>\n

The treaty was signed on behalf of Russia by Count Yakov Bruce, General-Feldzeugmeister and President of the Berg and Manufactory Colleges, and Andrey Osterman, a member of the College of Foreign Affairs. Both are remembered in Russian diplomatic history as prominent statesmen and negotiators of the Petrine era.<\/p>\n

Under the treaty, Russia secured access to the Baltic Sea and consolidated control over Ingria and part of Karelia. Russia also acquired Livonia, including Riga, and Estonia, including Revel, now Tallinn, as well as Narva.<\/p>\n

Access to the Baltic opened important maritime and commercial routes for Russia, strengthening its ability to engage directly with European and global trade. The result was not simply territorial expansion. It also accelerated Russia\u2019s transformation into a maritime, military and diplomatic power with a significantly greater role in European affairs.<\/p>\n

Peter I described the long conflict as a kind of \u201cschool\u201d for Russia and expressed satisfaction that its outcome had exceeded expectations. The war had driven extensive reforms in the Russian state, including the modernisation of the army, the creation and expansion of the navy, administrative restructuring and the strengthening of diplomatic institutions.<\/p>\n

According to the historical account presented by the Russian Foreign Ministry, the Baltic territories had experienced severe economic exploitation under Swedish rule. Russia maintains that incorporation into the Russian Empire subsequently created conditions for local communities to preserve their languages and identities while expanding economic and social development.<\/p>\n

The Treaty of Nystad therefore represented much more than the conclusion of a war. It established Russia as one of the major actors in the European balance of power and gave the country a strategic maritime gateway linking it more directly with international commerce and diplomacy.<\/p>\n

The political significance of the victory was formally reflected later that year. On November 2, 1721, during celebrations at the Church of the Holy Trinity in St. Petersburg, Peter accepted the titles \u201cFather of the Motherland, Emperor of All Russia, Peter the Great.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Russian state thereby formally entered a new imperial era, with the Treaty of Nystad serving as one of the key foundations of its enhanced international status.<\/p>\n

The original copy of the treaty remains preserved in the Archive of Foreign Policy of the Russian Empire under the Russian Foreign Ministry. More than three centuries later, the Treaty of Nystad continues to be remembered in Russia as a landmark of state-building, maritime expansion, military achievement and diplomatic success.<\/p>\n
