On the eve of the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, China has sent a clear message that it is ready to work with all BRICS partners to ensure that greater BRICS cooperation advances steadily and achieves further progress. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning\u2019s statement is more than a routine diplomatic formulation. At a time of rapid changes in the international system, it reflects China\u2019s broader vision of the direction in which BRICS should develop.<\/p>\n

BRICS has already moved far beyond its original form. Initially developed as a platform for economic dialogue among major emerging economies, it has gradually become an important structure representing the political, economic and strategic voice of the developing world. Its growing significance is not determined simply by the number of its members. The increasing share of BRICS members and partners in global population, trade, manufacturing, energy, technology and natural resources is steadily turning the grouping into an important centre of influence in the international system.<\/p>\n

In this context, China\u2019s concept of \u201cgreater BRICS cooperation\u201d carries particular significance. It does not simply mean admitting more members. Its broader purpose is to deepen practical cooperation among developing countries in economic development, finance, technology, energy, food security, health, climate change, artificial intelligence, the digital economy and international governance. China\u2019s approach suggests that the future of BRICS should increasingly be measured by tangible results rather than declarations alone.<\/p>\n

One of the most important elements in Mao Ning\u2019s statement is the emphasis on steady progress. Many multilateral institutions around the world have become less effective because of political rivalry, ideological divisions and institutional complexity. The durability of BRICS, however, does not depend on complete political uniformity among its members. Its strength lies in identifying common interests despite differences.<\/p>\n

China, India, Russia, Brazil, South Africa and other members have their own national priorities. They do not always agree on every international question. Yet the need for development, greater economic sovereignty, stronger representation, diversified financial options and a more equitable role in global governance provides a common foundation for cooperation.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s positive role becomes particularly important in this context. China is one of the world\u2019s largest economies, a major manufacturing centre, a leading trading power and an increasingly important force in technological and infrastructure development. Its contribution to BRICS therefore extends beyond political influence. China\u2019s experience in industrialisation, supply chains, green energy, electric vehicles, digital infrastructure, artificial intelligence and scientific research offers substantial potential for cooperation with other developing economies.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the long-term success of BRICS cannot depend on China alone. That is precisely why Mao Ning\u2019s reference to working with \u201call BRICS partners\u201d is important. If BRICS were to develop into an alliance dominated by a single power, its international appeal could become limited. Its real strength lies in its multi-centred character.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s economic capacity, India\u2019s demographic and technological potential, Russia\u2019s energy resources and strategic influence, Brazil\u2019s agricultural strength and natural resources, South Africa\u2019s position as an important African partner, and the geographic and economic diversity of newer members can complement one another. BRICS becomes stronger when these different capabilities are combined rather than subordinated to a single centre.<\/p>\n

The New Delhi summit is especially important from this perspective. The participation of Chinese President Xi Jinping and preparations for a possible meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi place China-India relations at the centre of attention alongside the broader institutional agenda of BRICS.<\/p>\n

Stable, healthy and pragmatic relations between China and India are not merely a bilateral matter. They directly affect the effectiveness of BRICS, coordination within the Global South and the broader stability of Asia.<\/p>\n

China and India do have differences. Border issues, strategic competition, trade imbalances and questions of regional influence remain complex. But maintaining dialogue, economic engagement and multilateral cooperation despite those differences is itself an indication of mature diplomacy. BRICS provides both countries with an institutional platform where they can work together on common development interests rather than allowing disagreements to define the entire relationship.<\/p>\n

For this reason, Xi-Modi dialogue has significance beyond bilateral relations. It can influence the internal cohesion of BRICS and determine how effectively the grouping can translate its expanding membership into coordinated action.<\/p>\n

Russian President Vladimir Putin\u2019s visit to India and his participation in the summit further enhance the strategic importance of the New Delhi meeting. Against the backdrop of continuing geopolitical tensions, BRICS members do not always share identical views on every international conflict. Yet the fact that they continue to meet, negotiate and cooperate is itself important.<\/p>\n

BRICS can strengthen its long-term influence if it avoids becoming a military alliance and instead remains focused on economic development, political dialogue and practical multilateral coordination. Its comparative advantage lies in providing an additional platform for cooperation rather than reproducing the structures of traditional geopolitical blocs.<\/p>\n

International finance is another area where BRICS has considerable potential. Developing countries face enormous financing requirements for infrastructure, energy, digital transformation, public health and climate adaptation. Experience has shown that dependence on traditional financial institutions alone cannot always meet those needs.<\/p>\n

Institutions such as the New Development Bank can significantly increase the practical relevance of BRICS if they expand development financing, support local-currency transactions and design financial instruments suited to the priorities of developing economies.<\/p>\n

This does not mean that the U.S. dollar or the existing international financial system will suddenly be displaced. Structural financial change takes place gradually. But greater use of local currencies in trade, diversified payment mechanisms and efforts to reduce financial vulnerability can provide developing economies with additional choices.<\/p>\n

The most constructive contribution BRICS can make is not to wage a campaign against any single currency, but to widen the range of economic options available to its members and partners.<\/p>\n

Technology will be another decisive field. The world is entering an era of intense competition in artificial intelligence, semiconductors, quantum technology, satellite systems, digital payments, cyber security and green technologies. If technological access remains concentrated in a small number of countries and corporations, digital inequality among developing nations could deepen.<\/p>\n

BRICS therefore has an opportunity to develop joint research programmes, technical training, open innovation networks and affordable technology platforms for developing countries. Such cooperation could help ensure that the next phase of the technological revolution is more inclusive.<\/p>\n

Agriculture and food security also offer substantial scope for cooperation. BRICS countries include some of the world\u2019s largest agricultural producers, consumers and markets. Climate change, drought, floods, supply disruptions and geopolitical tensions are creating new pressures on global food systems.<\/p>\n

Joint programmes in agricultural technology, seed research, irrigation, weather forecasting, food storage and supply-chain resilience could provide direct benefits to developing countries far beyond the BRICS membership itself.<\/p>\n

Climate change and disaster management are particularly relevant from Nepal\u2019s perspective. The Himalayan region is facing increasing risks from glacial lake outburst floods, landslides, extreme rainfall, snow-related hazards and rapid environmental change. If BRICS strengthens cooperation in satellite data, weather forecasting, earth observation, early-warning systems, rescue technologies and climate adaptation, countries such as Nepal could benefit directly.<\/p>\n

Nepal is not currently a BRICS member, but the continued expansion of the grouping and its stronger focus on the Global South create new diplomatic possibilities for Kathmandu. China and India are Nepal\u2019s two immediate neighbours. Nepal also has long-standing friendly relations with Russia and expanding diplomatic and economic ties with several other BRICS members.<\/p>\n

Nepal should therefore study BRICS not as a distant international structure, but as a potential platform for development finance, energy cooperation, disaster security, science, technology and infrastructure.<\/p>\n

The future strength of BRICS will not come from turning it into an anti-Western political platform. Its greater value lies in creating additional choices within the international system. If BRICS prioritises reform, representation, development and equal opportunity instead of rhetoric about dismantling the existing order, its global influence is likely to grow further.<\/p>\n

Most developing countries do not seek to sever relations with Western countries. They seek broader options, diversified partnerships and greater room for independent decision-making. This reality is one of the deepest foundations behind the expansion of BRICS.<\/p>\n

China\u2019s declaration that it is ready to work with all BRICS partners to advance greater BRICS cooperation steadily and further is therefore significant. The success of that vision will ultimately be measured not by speeches but by outcomes that citizens can feel.<\/p>\n

The real questions will be whether trade becomes easier, whether development finance becomes more accessible, whether technology becomes more widely available, whether food and energy security improve, and whether the voice of developing countries becomes more effective in global governance.<\/p>\n

The 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi represents another important test. China\u2019s active participation, India\u2019s chairmanship, Russia\u2019s engagement and the growing diversity of the broader BRICS family give the summit an opportunity to become more than another annual diplomatic gathering.<\/p>\n

It can help define the next stage of multipolar cooperation.<\/p>\n

The wider meaning of Mao Ning\u2019s brief statement lies precisely here. China appears to view BRICS not as a temporary geopolitical reaction, but as a long-term structure for development and multilateral cooperation. If BRICS can transform diversity from a source of difficulty into a source of strength, it could emerge in the coming decade not only as a stronger voice for the Global South, but also as an important contributor to the evolving architecture of the world economy and international governance.<\/p>\n
