At a time when the global order is undergoing rapid transformation, the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi has delivered an important message: the world does not necessarily have to move toward another era of confrontation and division. A broader framework of cooperation can instead be built around development, dialogue and shared interests. Hosted under India\u2019s presidency on September 12 and 13, the summit placed resilience, innovation, cooperation and sustainability at the centre of its agenda. More importantly, BRICS once again demonstrated its determination to advance political and security dialogue, economic and financial cooperation, and people-to-people engagement simultaneously.<\/p>\n

The growing importance of BRICS cannot be understood merely through the combined economic weight of its members. Its deeper strength lies in its ability to bring countries with different political systems, security priorities and economic structures onto a common platform. China, India and Russia do not hold identical positions on every international issue. Yet their ability to maintain dialogue despite these differences is precisely what gives BRICS strategic significance. The interaction between Chinese President Xi Jinping and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi, and the broader effort to view bilateral relations through the prism of partnership rather than permanent rivalry, provide a positive signal for Asian stability. India and Russia have likewise reaffirmed their commitment to expanding trade, energy, industrial cooperation and multilateral coordination.<\/p>\n

The growing strategic coordination among China, India and Russia should not be interpreted as the creation of a military alliance directed against another power. Its more practical significance lies in the possibility of stabilising Asia through dialogue, economic interdependence and diplomatic management. When these three major powers maintain direct communication and institutional cooperation, the risks arising from border tensions, trade disruption, energy insecurity and wider regional mistrust can be better managed. BRICS has consistently supported the peaceful settlement of disputes through dialogue, consultation and diplomacy, reinforcing the principle that differences among major powers need not inevitably become conflicts.<\/p>\n

One of the most tangible benefits of BRICS lies in the economic sphere. Efforts to develop faster, less expensive and more secure cross-border payment systems, expand trade and investment in local currencies, strengthen supply chains and improve access to finance and technology for small and medium-sized enterprises could gradually reshape economic cooperation across the Global South. The expanding role of the New Development Bank, discussions surrounding stronger financial safety mechanisms and new channels for infrastructure investment indicate that BRICS is moving beyond political declarations toward a more practical economic architecture.<\/p>\n

This cooperation is also expanding into technology and advanced production. Collaboration in artificial intelligence, quantum technologies, industrial digital transformation, solar energy, robotics, research infrastructure and innovation could provide developing countries with an opportunity to become not merely consumers of advanced technology but also producers and partners. Cooperation in healthcare, pharmaceutical regulation, digital health, tuberculosis research and pandemic early-warning systems further demonstrates how BRICS can translate high-level diplomacy into benefits that directly affect ordinary citizens.<\/p>\n

Disaster management is another field of particular relevance to South Asia. Countries across the Himalayan and wider Asian region increasingly face climate change, floods, landslides, glacial hazards and major infrastructure losses. Greater cooperation on early-warning data, climate-resilient infrastructure, emergency preparedness and disaster-risk reduction can therefore have substantial practical value. A shift from reacting after disasters occur toward prevention, preparedness, information sharing and resilient infrastructure would benefit countries stretching from the Himalayas to coastal regions.<\/p>\n

The future success of BRICS, however, will not depend simply on the expansion of its membership. Its credibility will depend on how effectively major members such as China and India manage their differences, how Russia connects its strategic influence with common development objectives, and how the wider membership converts political consensus into practical cooperation. The New Delhi summit nevertheless points in a promising direction. Agreement is possible even in the presence of differences. Cooperation is possible even amid competition. Regional stability becomes stronger when major powers keep channels of dialogue open.<\/p>\n

For Nepal, these developments cannot be viewed as distant geopolitical events. Nepal\u2019s two giant neighbours, China and India, are central pillars of BRICS, while Nepal has maintained longstanding friendly relations with Russia. Expanding cooperation within BRICS in trade, development finance, technology, energy, disaster management and multipolar diplomacy could therefore create new opportunities for Nepal as well. Nepal does not need to choose one geopolitical camp over another. Its national interest lies in supporting a regional environment based on peace, connectivity, development and shared prosperity and in making constructive use of the opportunities such an environment creates.<\/p>\n

That is ultimately the central message emerging from New Delhi. The world today needs more bridges, not more walls. Stronger dialogue and cooperation among major powers such as China, India and Russia is a positive development not only for the Global South but also for the peace, economic security and strategic stability of Asia as a whole. If BRICS can transform competition into managed cooperation, its greatest achievement will not simply be the creation of new financial mechanisms or larger markets. Its most enduring contribution may be the institutionalisation of a simple but increasingly important principle: major powers with different interests can coexist, cooperate and pursue development without turning every difference into confrontation.<\/p>\n
