The affected skin may itch, become red, peel, feel dry or develop greasy scales. Such symptoms, however, do not always indicate the same disease. They may result from seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, psoriasis, fungal infection, allergy or irritation caused by products applied to the skin.

One of the most common causes is seborrheic dermatitis. It typically affects areas rich in oil-producing glands, including the scalp, eyebrows, sides of the nose, outer ears, area behind the ears and upper chest. The skin may appear red and develop white to yellow, sometimes greasy, flakes. A yeast called Malassezia, which normally lives on human skin, appears to play a role along with skin oil production and an individual’s immune response. Seborrheic dermatitis is not simply caused by poor hygiene, and it is not usually transmitted from one person to another through ordinary contact.

Eczema can produce similar symptoms. In eczema, the skin is often dry, itchy and highly sensitive. Soaps, perfumes, cosmetics, hair dyes, metals, hearing devices, eyeglass frames, earphones and other substances may also trigger contact dermatitis. In such cases, symptoms often develop after the introduction of a new product or become most obvious in areas that repeatedly come into contact with the offending material.

Psoriasis is another condition that may cause scaling. It results from an accelerated skin-cell turnover and often produces thicker, clearly defined patches covered with scales. It may affect the scalp, areas around the ears, elbows, knees and other parts of the body. A family history can increase the likelihood of psoriasis. In some people, features of seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis overlap, making the condition difficult to identify by appearance alone.

Fungal infection is another important possibility. A ring-shaped patch with a raised, redder outer border and a relatively clearer centre may suggest tinea, commonly known as ringworm. Fungal infections can spread to other areas of the body and may also pass from one person to another. For that reason, not every itchy or scaly patch should automatically be treated as ordinary dandruff.

Correct diagnosis is the foundation of effective treatment. A doctor will usually assess the appearance and location of the rash, how long it has been present, whether it is spreading, which skin or cosmetic products are being used and whether similar symptoms are present elsewhere on the body. If necessary, a skin scraping may be examined for fungus, allergy testing may be considered, or, in uncommon cases, a small skin sample may be studied. Recurrent or persistent symptoms are better evaluated by a dermatologist than repeatedly treated with medicines chosen without a diagnosis.

Seborrheic dermatitis is commonly managed with antifungal medicines, medicated shampoos and, when appropriate, anti-inflammatory creams. Some shampoos used for the scalp may also help around the beard or external ear area when used appropriately and under medical guidance. Medicines, oils or home remedies, however, should not be poured into the ear canal without professional advice. If the eardrum or ear canal is affected, inappropriate substances can aggravate the condition.

Natural and home-based measures should be considered supportive rather than replacements for proper treatment. Keeping the affected skin gently clean, avoiding very hot water, reducing harsh soaps and strongly fragranced products, and avoiding repeated scratching can help. Applying a fragrance-free moisturiser suitable for sensitive skin after washing may reduce dryness and itching. Adequate sleep, stress control and a generally healthy lifestyle may also help people whose symptoms tend to flare repeatedly.

Coconut oil, aloe vera and similar home remedies are widely used, but they do not affect everyone in the same way. Oils may reduce dryness in some people, while excessive oil may aggravate certain cases of seborrheic dermatitis or fungal disease. Aloe vera may feel soothing for some but can cause irritation or allergy in sensitive individuals. “Natural” does not automatically mean harmless. Any new topical substance is best tested on a small area first.

There is no strong evidence that one particular food alone causes these conditions in most people. Nevertheless, a balanced diet containing vegetables, fruits, adequate protein and essential micronutrients supports overall skin health. Excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, chronic sleep deprivation and prolonged stress may worsen some long-term inflammatory skin conditions. If a person repeatedly notices a clear link between a specific food and symptom flare-ups, recording the pattern and discussing it with a healthcare professional can be useful.

Scratching scaly skin around the nose or ears with fingernails should be avoided. Repeated scratching can damage the skin and allow bacterial infection to develop. Cotton buds, pins or other objects should also not be inserted deeply into the ear for cleaning. Even when the visible problem appears confined to the outer ear, pain inside the ear, pus, unpleasant odour, swelling or reduced hearing requires assessment by an ear, nose and throat specialist.

Certain warning signs should not be dismissed as simple dandruff. Severe redness and swelling, bleeding or discharge, fever, rapid spread of the rash, swelling around the eyes, unusual hair loss or symptoms that do not improve after several weeks deserve medical attention. People with diabetes, weakened immunity or other chronic illnesses should be especially cautious because skin infections may become complicated more quickly.

Dandruff-like scaling around the nose, ears, eyebrows or other parts of the body is therefore not merely a cosmetic problem. Several different skin disorders can produce similar appearances, and treatment varies according to the underlying cause. Correct diagnosis, gentle skin care, avoidance of unnecessary irritants, appropriate moisturising and medical treatment when needed remain the safest foundation of long-term control. Natural remedies may provide supportive relief, but persistent, spreading or damaged skin should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional rather than managed indefinitely with home treatment alone.

Adrian Mercer Dandruff is usually associated with the scalp, but similar white or yellowish scales can also appear around the nose, on the outer ears, behind the ears, around the eyebrows, forehead, beard area, chest and other parts of the body.
