Alongside the diplomatic activities of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi, the special presidential cars used by the two leaders also drew international attention. Xi arrived in a Chinese-made Hongqi N701, while Putin used Russia\u2019s Aurus Senat. Their vehicles attracted interest not simply as luxury cars, but as symbols of security, national technology, industrial self-reliance and state power.<\/p>\n

India had arranged extensive transport and security measures for heads of state and delegations attending the BRICS Summit in New Delhi. However, leaders facing particularly high security risks, such as Xi and Putin, normally travel abroad with key parts of their own protective infrastructure. Their specially designed vehicles were therefore also brought to India. Such presidential motorcades usually include trusted drivers, security technicians, communications systems and support vehicles, making the limousine itself part of a broader mobile security architecture.<\/p>\n

The Hongqi N701 used by Xi Jinping is considered one of China\u2019s most secretive official vehicles. \u201cHongqi\u201d means \u201cRed Flag.\u201d Established in 1958, the Chinese automobile brand has long been associated with the country\u2019s top political leadership and major state occasions. As China developed its domestic automobile industry, Hongqi evolved beyond an ordinary commercial brand into a symbol of national prestige and state protocol.<\/p>\n

The N701 first gained wider international attention during Xi Jinping\u2019s visit to Hong Kong in 2022. It has since appeared during major state events and overseas visits. Estimated to be about five and a half metres long, the N701 is visibly different from standard production vehicles because of its elongated body, imposing front grille, raised roofline, reinforced appearance and extended rear passenger compartment.<\/p>\n

However, much of the fascination surrounding the N701 comes from what is not publicly known. China has not released detailed official information on its engine, level of armour protection, ballistic resistance, blast protection, communications systems or emergency life-support capabilities. International reports have speculated that it may use a V8 or V12 engine and include reinforced armour, bullet-resistant glass, sealed-air systems and blast-resistant construction, but many of these technical claims have not been officially confirmed.<\/p>\n

This secrecy is itself part of the vehicle\u2019s appeal. Keeping detailed information about a head of state\u2019s security system confidential is a normal element of protective planning. Claims that the N701 can withstand almost any bomb attack or survive specific categories of extremely powerful assault should therefore not be treated as established fact. What can be stated with greater confidence is that it is a highly restricted government limousine developed for China\u2019s top leadership and fitted with advanced protective systems.<\/p>\n

More official technical information is available about Putin\u2019s Aurus Senat. Russia developed the Aurus family under the \u201cKortezh\u201d project partly to reduce dependence on foreign luxury vehicles for senior state leaders. For many years, the Russian presidency relied on vehicles such as the Mercedes-Benz S 600 Pullman Guard, but from 2018 the Aurus Senat became the principal presidential limousine.<\/p>\n

The publicly available version of the Aurus Senat limousine is powered by a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 hybrid engine producing around 598 horsepower and 880 Newton metres of torque. It uses a nine-speed automatic transmission and an all-wheel-drive system. The extended limousine version is approximately 6.13 metres long. According to publicly released manufacturer information, armoured versions can be prepared to high ballistic protection standards, including VR8 and VR10 classifications. The full security specifications of Putin\u2019s actual presidential vehicle, however, remain classified.<\/p>\n

The exact thickness of its armour, composition of the glass, secure communications architecture, emergency systems and real-world resistance to attack are not publicly known. As with other high-security state vehicles, the Aurus is widely believed to include bullet-resistant protection, reinforced doors, special tyres, underbody protection and secure communications. But the specifications of Putin\u2019s presidential car should not automatically be assumed to be identical to those of the commercial or publicly displayed versions.<\/p>\n

The Aurus Senat received additional attention in New Delhi because Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi also rode in the vehicle together with Putin. After a bilateral meeting, Modi and Putin travelled together in the Aurus Senat to the international industrial exhibition INNOPROM India. Allowing another country\u2019s prime minister to travel inside a presidential vehicle with such restricted access was widely interpreted as a visible gesture of personal confidence and political closeness.<\/p>\n

The episode also offered another example of what might be called \u201ccar diplomacy.\u201d Compared with formal talks held across a table, travelling together in the same vehicle can give leaders an opportunity for more informal conversation. Shared travel can therefore become more than transportation. It may also serve as a visible expression of personal trust, political comfort and diplomatic messaging.<\/p>\n

Xi\u2019s Hongqi and Putin\u2019s Aurus share a deeper similarity. Both are domestically manufactured, and both are presented as demonstrations of national industrial and technological capability. In earlier periods, senior Chinese and Russian leaders relied more heavily on foreign luxury automobile brands. Today, Beijing and Moscow have increasingly placed their own national brands at the centre of presidential protocol.<\/p>\n

For China, Hongqi is more than an automobile. It is closely linked with modern Chinese industrial development, national identity and state tradition. Its distinctive vertical grille, red flag emblem and design language influenced by Chinese aesthetic concepts are intended to project a visual identity different from Western luxury brands. As China has become the world\u2019s largest automobile market and a global leader in electric vehicle manufacturing, the president\u2019s official car has also become a way of demonstrating industrial confidence.<\/p>\n

For Russia, the political meaning of Aurus is somewhat different, although the underlying message is similar. The vehicle reflects a shift from reliance on foreign state limousines toward domestic design and production. In an environment shaped by Western sanctions, restrictions on access to technology and broader economic pressure, the Russian president\u2019s use of a domestically produced car at major international events also serves as a demonstration of industrial sovereignty.<\/p>\n

Reducing the discussion of presidential cars to engine power, price or luxury misses their broader significance. A modern presidential limousine functions simultaneously as a security vehicle, communications platform, temporary protected workspace and instrument of state protocol. Its central purpose is not speed or comfort, but protection, reliability and continuity of communication during emergencies.<\/p>\n

The presence of the Hongqi N701 and Aurus Senat at the BRICS Summit therefore became more than a matter of automotive curiosity. Xi and Putin, by using vehicles made in their own countries, conveyed a similar message. At a time when strategic autonomy is becoming an increasingly important theme in global politics, security and economics, even the vehicles used by heads of state are becoming symbols of national technology and self-reliance.<\/p>\n

Xi Jinping\u2019s Hongqi N701 remains a Chinese state limousine surrounded by considerable secrecy, while more technical information is publicly available about Vladimir Putin\u2019s Aurus Senat. Yet the most sensitive security specifications of both presidential versions remain classified. It is precisely this combination of security, secrecy, domestic technology and political symbolism that made the two vehicles a notable part of the diplomatic scene in New Delhi.<\/p>\n
