Russia\u2019s Foreign Intelligence Service, the SVR, has claimed that there is no evidence proving Russian involvement in the drone incident at Germany\u2019s Leipzig\/Halle Airport. Citing information it says it received, the SVR Press Bureau stated that intelligence services from several NATO member states examined the incident and found no clear evidence of Russian involvement, while instead identifying indications of a possible \u201cUkrainian connection.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to the SVR, those intelligence services advised their governments not to make immediate and categorical public accusations against Moscow. The Russian agency said the German leadership nevertheless chose to accuse Russia. German officials have linked the Leipzig Airport drone incident to Russia, while German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has also claimed that the incident had been prepared in Russia over a long period. Moscow has rejected those allegations.<\/p>\n

The Russian intelligence service further alleged that the German government linked the incident to Russia in an effort to build political support for the large defence expenditures proposed in Germany\u2019s 2027 budget. This interpretation is an SVR claim, and no publicly available independent evidence has so far confirmed it.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, in the Saxony-Anhalt state election held on September 6, the Alternative for Germany, or AfD, emerged as the largest party with 43.8 percent of the vote. It won 39 seats in the 83-member state parliament, while the Christian Democratic Union, or CDU, received 17.2 percent. The SVR linked the result to voter dissatisfaction with the German government\u2019s political messaging on Russia, although the election outcome cannot be established as the direct result of a single foreign-policy issue or one drone incident.<\/p>\n

Attention has now also turned to the elections scheduled for September 20 in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin. Those elections are being viewed as another important political test for Germany\u2019s federal government and Chancellor Merz.<\/p>\n

The Leipzig drone incident has further intensified the continuing exchange of security accusations among Russia, Ukraine and NATO. While the German side has alleged Russian involvement, Moscow has described the accusations as politically motivated. An independently and publicly verified conclusion regarding responsibility for the incident, however, has yet to emerge.<\/p>\n
