The 2026 Yangley Festival and Tibetan Opera cultural series has opened in Batang County of Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture in China\u2019s Sichuan Province, bringing together traditional performing arts, tourism, local products and community life. The festival, which began on September 11 at Longwangtang Public Cultural Park, places Batang Tibetan Opera, a nationally recognized form of intangible cultural heritage, at the center of the celebration.<\/p>\n

The Yangley Festival, which has been celebrated in Batang for centuries, traditionally marks the transition from summer to autumn. The festival is associated with celebrating the harvest, expressing hopes for peace and prosperity, and strengthening community bonds. Every year in early September, people from different ethnic communities gather in traditional dress, set up tents, share local food, watch Tibetan opera and participate in traditional music and dance.<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s festival features performances by the Batang Tibetan Opera troupe as well as Tibetan opera groups from Toelung Chusum in Xizang and Jomda in Aba. Bringing performers representing different regional traditions onto one stage has created an opportunity for cultural exchange, mutual learning and a wider appreciation of the diversity within Tibetan opera.<\/p>\n

Sangye Dhondup, a researcher at the Institute of Ethnic Arts of the Xizang Autonomous Region, said presenting Tibetan opera traditions from different regions together provides an important platform for cultural exchange. He noted that the Yangley Festival also reflects deeper interaction and integration among different communities while giving new vitality to the preservation and transmission of intangible cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

Organizers have sought to connect the traditional festival with modern cultural tourism. Tibetan opera performances are staged during the day, while cultural activities and a lively marketplace continue into the evening. Visitors can experience traditional music and dance, regional cultural performances, Tibetan costumes, local lifestyles and commercial activities within the same festival setting.<\/p>\n

Outside the main performance area, exhibitions and sales feature Batang buckwheat, various grains, highland fruits and vegetables, and other agricultural products. The initiative has expanded the festival beyond cultural celebration by linking it with local commerce, tourism consumption and opportunities for residents to increase their income.<\/p>\n

Running until September 18, the festival includes special Tibetan opera performances, traditional dances, cultural exchanges among participating regions and displays of traditional clothing. Through these activities, Batang is seeking to combine cultural preservation with tourism and local industrial development, turning traditional heritage into a resource for contemporary economic and social development.<\/p>\n
