The Russian Consulate General in Bonn, Germany, has been officially closed, marking the end of more than eight decades of Russian diplomatic and consular presence in the Rhine region. A formal ceremony was held on September 15, during which the Russian national flag was lowered to the national anthem and the plaque bearing the name of the Consulate General was removed from the building.<\/p>\n

The ceremony was attended by Russian Ambassador to Germany Sergey Nechaev, Russian Consul General in Bonn Oleg Krasnitsky, diplomats from the Russian Embassy and Consulate General, members of the Russian community and journalists.<\/p>\n

Addressing the ceremony, Ambassador Nechaev said Russia was bringing to a close a diplomatic presence in the Rhine region that had lasted for around 80 years. He said Soviet and later Russian leaders, politicians and diplomats had played an important role in building new post-war relations with West Germany.<\/p>\n

Nechaev noted that historical reconciliation after the Second World War had not been an easy process, particularly given the enormous suffering and losses endured by the Soviet people. Nevertheless, he said, Moscow extended a hand to Germany and bilateral relations gradually developed into good-neighbourliness, partnership and cooperation across a wide range of areas.<\/p>\n

The Russian side said the Consulate General in Bonn had been forced to cease operations as a result of what Moscow describes as \u201cunfriendly steps\u201d taken by the German authorities. Relations between Russia and Germany have deteriorated sharply in recent years, particularly following the escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.<\/p>\n

With the closure of the Bonn mission, Russia\u2019s diplomatic and consular presence in the Rhine region spanning more than eight decades has formally come to an end. The development represents another significant contraction in Russia-Germany diplomatic ties.<\/p>\n
