Russia commemorated the historic victory at the Battle of Kulikovo on September 21, marking one of the country\u2019s Days of Military Glory. In 1380, Russian forces led by Grand Prince Dmitry of Moscow defeated the army of Mamai, a powerful military leader of the Golden Horde. The victory occupies an important place in Russian history as a milestone in the consolidation of the Russian principalities and their struggle against external domination.<\/p>\n

In the late 14th century, Mamai launched a military campaign to reassert his authority over the Russian lands and enforce tribute payments. In response, warriors from different principalities assembled under Dmitry\u2019s command. The opposing armies met on Kulikovo Field, near the Don and Nepryadva rivers, in what is now Russia\u2019s Tula Region.<\/p>\n

According to historical accounts, Dmitry crossed the Don River and committed his forces to battle before Mamai could join his allies. The campaign also holds considerable spiritual significance in Russian tradition. According to legend, St Sergius of Radonezh blessed Dmitry before he departed for the battlefield.<\/p>\n

Another celebrated episode associated with the battle is the legendary duel between Peresvet, a Russian warrior monk, and Chelubey, a champion of the Golden Horde. Traditional accounts describe both warriors receiving fatal wounds during the encounter. The episode became a prominent symbol of courage and self-sacrifice in Russian literature, painting and historical memory, although some details derive from later literary traditions rather than contemporary records.<\/p>\n

The decisive moment of the battle is traditionally associated with an ambush regiment commanded by Prince Vladimir of Serpukhov and Dmitry Bobrok-Volynsky. Concealed in an oak grove, the cavalry launched an attack at a critical stage of the fighting, helping turn the battle against Mamai\u2019s forces.<\/p>\n

Following the victory, Grand Prince Dmitry became known as Dmitry Donskoy, meaning \u201cDmitry of the Don.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Battle of Kulikovo did not immediately end the Golden Horde\u2019s domination of the Russian lands. The struggle continued for another century. The Great Stand on the Ugra River in 1480 is traditionally regarded as the decisive turning point that brought the Horde\u2019s political supremacy over Moscow to an end.<\/p>\n

Dmitry Donskoy was canonised by the Russian Orthodox Church in 1988. The Church recognised his religious devotion, service to his people and commitment to the Christian ideal of self-sacrifice.<\/p>\n

In contemporary Russia, the Battle of Kulikovo remains an enduring symbol of historical unity, courage and the defence of the homeland. Its annual commemoration on September 21 recalls the collective efforts of warriors from different Russian principalities and the victory\u2019s significance in the development of Russian statehood.<\/p>\n
