One side of a mountain may be wet while the other remains dry. Even on a day when rain is forecast, some homes may receive none. To understand why, we need to look beyond water evaporating from the sea. We must also ask where the air came from, how much moisture it contains, what makes it rise and how droplets grow inside clouds.

Heat from the sun turns water from oceans, rivers, lakes, soil and plants into vapour that enters the atmosphere. Water vapour itself is invisible. As moist air rises, the surrounding air pressure falls and the rising air cools. Once it cools enough, some of its vapour condenses around tiny particles, such as dust or salt, to form microscopic droplets. In colder conditions, ice crystals can form. Together, these droplets and crystals make clouds.

A cloud does not necessarily produce rain. Its earliest droplets are too small to fall to the ground. Some collide and merge, growing into larger drops. In cold clouds, ice crystals may also grow and begin to fall. If they pass through warmer air below, they melt into raindrops. Precipitation reaches the ground when its drops or ice particles become large enough to overcome the air currents holding them up. If the air beneath a cloud is very dry, falling drops may evaporate before reaching the surface. Seeing a cloud, or even a distant curtain of rain, does not mean rain has fallen where you stand.

Moist air also needs a reason to rise. When the ground heats up during the day, the air above it can rise and form rain clouds over a limited area. When air masses with different properties meet, one may be lifted over the other, producing rain across a wider area for longer. A mountain can force moist air uphill, where it cools and may produce precipitation. Sometimes one of these mechanisms dominates; at other times, several act together.

Cloud size helps explain why neighbouring places receive different amounts of rain. Clouds produced by daytime heating can develop over relatively small areas. Their moisture content, strength of upward air currents and ability to produce raindrops vary from place to place. A rain cloud also moves with the wind: new sections develop while older sections weaken. The area and intensity of rainfall can therefore change quickly. A large weather system may bring rain to a broad region, but even then the rain will rarely be equally heavy everywhere.

Nepal’s terrain makes these differences especially pronounced. During the monsoon, moist air moving toward the hills may rise and produce heavy rain on slopes facing the wind. After crossing the mountains, air can descend, warm and become drier, leaving areas on the other side with less rain. This is known as the rain-shadow effect and helps explain the relative dryness of some trans-Himalayan areas. It does not, however, explain every dry day in a particular district. Wind direction, temperature and the position of the weather system also matter.

The amount of rain that falls depends on more than the water in a cloud. If moist air continues to arrive and clouds repeatedly form over the same area, rainfall can accumulate rapidly. If a cloud moves away quickly, the total at one location may be smaller. Repeated cloud development or slow-moving rain increases the risk of flooding. Conditions on the ground matter too: soil already saturated by earlier rain may absorb less water, increasing the danger of flooding and landslides.

High humidity does not guarantee rain. Moisture is necessary, but the air must also rise and cool under suitable conditions. Nor does a cloudier day always bring more rainfall. Cloud depth, temperature and the processes that enlarge droplets or ice crystals differ. Precipitation formed in a cold cloud may reach warmer ground as rain; where the air remains cold enough, it may reach the surface as snow.

Meteorologists study these processes using rain gauges, weather radar, satellites and computer forecasting models. A rain gauge directly measures what fell at its location, but it cannot by itself describe conditions several kilometres away. Radar helps track the location and movement of precipitation, although mountains can block its signal. Satellites observe clouds across vast and remote areas, but often estimate rainfall at the surface indirectly. Combining these tools with local observations improves forecasts.

Despite advances in research, it remains difficult to say with certainty exactly when rain will begin in a particular neighbourhood. Small, intense rain clouds can develop and move rapidly. A forecast should therefore be understood in terms of probability rather than as a promise of what will happen at every address. When conditions are hazardous, people should follow updated warnings and river levels as well as the conditions around them.

Climate change has made rainfall research more urgent. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, warmer air can hold more water vapour, creating conditions for more intense heavy rainfall in many regions. This does not mean every place will receive more rain every day. Air circulation, seasons and geography shape local outcomes. Establishing how much climate change contributed to a particular rainfall event requires a separate study.

The basic science of rain is clear: moist air rises and cools, clouds form, and sufficiently large drops or ice particles fall. But these processes do not unfold everywhere at the same time, at the same speed or with the same intensity. That is why rainfall can differ between neighbourhoods as well as across entire regions. In a country with terrain as varied as Nepal’s, understanding rain is practical knowledge for farming, travel, early warning and the protection of lives.

Adrian Mercer Heavy rain can drench one neighbourhood while the sun shines a few kilometres away.
