Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said world politics is moving towards a multipolar order. Addressing the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly on Saturday, he said countries of the Global South and East are emerging as independent centres of development and regional security.<\/p>\n

According to Lavrov, sovereignty, international law and resistance to external pressure underpin Russia\u2019s foreign policy. He said cooperation among sovereign states is expanding through forums including the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation and BRICS. He accused Western countries of trying to preserve their longstanding influence and privileges by imposing their rules on others.<\/p>\n

Citing events in Venezuela and Iran, Lavrov said the use of force had further destabilised the international order. He called for the immediate release of Venezuelan President Nicol\u00e1s Maduro and his wife, and condemned the killing of Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other officials. The legal and political interpretation of these events in his speech represents the Russian government\u2019s position.<\/p>\n

On the war in Ukraine, Lavrov claimed that Russia was continuing its military operation to protect the security and rights of people in Donbas and the territory Moscow calls Novorossiya. He reiterated Russia\u2019s commitment to eliminating what it considers threats to its security and achieving the operation\u2019s objectives. He also called for the principles of the UN Charter to be applied consistently.<\/p>\n

Referring to the victory over Nazism and the judgment of the Nuremberg Tribunal, Lavrov said the lessons of history must be remembered. He accused some European political leaders of promoting extremist and anti-Russian views. His address reaffirmed Moscow\u2019s established positions on a multipolar world order, its confrontation with the West and the war in Ukraine.<\/p>\n
