Opposing moves towards \u201cTaiwan independence\u201d and maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait serve the common interests of China and the United States, Zhang Han, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office, said on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Responding to a question at a regular press conference, Zhang described the Taiwan question as central to China\u2019s core interests and to the political foundation of China-U.S. relations. Properly managing it would help maintain bilateral stability, she said, while mishandling it could increase the risk of confrontation.<\/p>\n

Zhang accused the administration led by Lai Ching-te in Taiwan of rejecting the 1992 Consensus and pursuing separatist activities. She described those activities as a principal source of disruption to peace and stability across the Strait. These are the positions of the Chinese mainland authorities.<\/p>\n

Asked separately about UN General Assembly Resolution 2758, Zhang said the resolution established the government of the People\u2019s Republic of China as China\u2019s representative at the United Nations. Adopted in 1971, the resolution settled the question of China\u2019s representation at the UN. Its implications for Taiwan\u2019s international participation remain a matter of differing interpretations.<\/p>\n
