Eighty-five years have passed since the beginning of the Battle of Moscow, fought to defend the Soviet capital against Nazi Germany during the Second World War. The Soviet Red Army\u2019s resistance to the German offensive, which began on September 30, 1941, and its subsequent counteroffensive are regarded as important developments that changed the course of the war.<\/p>\n

Russian commemorative material released for the anniversary honours the contributions of soldiers, military cadets and civilians to Moscow\u2019s defence. In Russia\u2019s assessment, the battle thwarted Hitler\u2019s plan to capture the capital and strengthened confidence that the Nazi military could be defeated.<\/p>\n

By September 1941, German forces had advanced deep into Soviet territory. Leningrad was under siege, while Germany had concentrated substantial military forces for its offensive towards Moscow. The capital\u2019s political, industrial and transport significance made its defence a critical responsibility for the Soviet leadership.<\/p>\n

During the initial offensive, large numbers of Soviet units were encircled near Bryansk and Vyazma. Despite severe military losses, continued resistance bought time to strengthen Moscow\u2019s defensive lines and deploy additional troops. Preparations for possible fighting inside the city intensified, with civilians helping to construct defensive positions.<\/p>\n

The Red Army\u2019s counteroffensive in early December reversed the German advance towards the capital. Soviet forces pushed German troops back from Moscow, reducing the immediate threat to the city. The success dealt a serious blow to Hitler\u2019s strategy of defeating the Soviet Union in a short campaign.<\/p>\n

The significance of the victory extended beyond protecting the capital. It raised the morale of Soviet soldiers and civilians and demonstrated that sustained resistance against Germany was possible. In Russian historical memory, the battle stands as an event that shattered perceptions of Nazi military invincibility and strengthened the foundations for eventual victory.<\/p>\n

According to the Russian account, approximately one million people received the Medal \u201cFor the Defence of Moscow,\u201d while 110 were awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union. In May 1965, marking the 20th anniversary of victory, Moscow received the honorary title Hero City.<\/p>\n

The 85th anniversary renews remembrance of the sacrifices made in Moscow\u2019s defence, the combined efforts of soldiers and civilians, and resistance to Nazism. That defence remains an important historical symbol of the Soviet Union\u2019s role in the Second World War.<\/p>\n
