The Nepali Congress\u2019s 15th General Convention is choosing a new leadership. But the party\u2019s real test will begin after the names of office-bearers and Central Committee members are announced. With questions over the leadership\u2019s legitimacy and the prospect of a parallel convention, the gathering has brought a fundamental question into focus: how can the Congress restore internal unity and public trust?<\/p>\n

A general convention is a celebration of democratic practice, but holding an election alone does not prove that a party is internally democratic. It also matters whether delegates could vote freely, whether candidates had equal opportunities and whether differences of opinion were respected. After the election, the new leadership must establish itself not as the victor of a faction, but as the responsible representative of the entire party.<\/p>\n

The Congress\u2019s problem is not simply a lack of leadership change. It needs an honest assessment of why public confidence in the party has weakened, why younger generations have looked for alternatives and why its policies and programmes have failed to address people\u2019s everyday concerns effectively. Repeating calls for generational change, transformation and unity in convention speeches is easy; translating them into decisions and action is harder.<\/p>\n

The new leadership must present concrete plans to make candidate selection, party finances, internal decision-making and the distribution of responsibilities more transparent. It must set out clear policies on inflation, employment, education, health care and production. It must also establish a culture of reviewing its decisions in government and the issues it raised in opposition, acknowledging mistakes and making improvements.<\/p>\n

Displaying unity after the election by sidelining dissatisfied factions will not last. Real unity depends on involving leaders and members with differing views in decision-making, activating local organisations and ensuring that members\u2019 voices reach the leadership. If competition within the party turns into personal hostility, the cost will be borne not only by the party but also by voters.<\/p>\n

The Congress cannot win public trust today by speaking only of its historic legacy. Its commitment to democracy must be evident in its daily conduct, its demand for good governance in its own organisation and its claim to stand with the people in its policies and actions. The convention\u2019s success will be measured not only by who wins office, but by what the new leadership does to reform the party and when the public begins to see results.<\/p>\n

Voting selects the leadership; public trust proves its worth. The Congress\u2019s decisive task now is to leave the convention platform and chart a course toward change that people can see in their lives.<\/p>\n
