In a joint statement issued in Turkmenbashi on October 9, the heads of state of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan described respect for history as a foundation for peaceful coexistence and mutual trust.

The statement recognised the historical significance of the CIS’s establishment 35 years ago and the centuries-old cultural, historical and humanitarian ties among the peoples of the participating states. It paid tribute to those who defended freedom and independence during the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, and recalled achievements in post-war reconstruction, space exploration, science and culture.

The leaders described preserving historical memory as an effective way to counter discrimination, racism, xenophobia and intolerance. They called for efforts to resist the distortion of history, disinformation and extremism, and stressed the need to examine the complexities of the past critically, using historical sources and scholarship.

The leaders pledged to promote historical awareness through open, honest, professional and depoliticised dialogue. Their proposed areas of cooperation include raising public awareness of commemorative dates, protecting historical sites and memorials, organising exhibitions, film screenings, conferences and expert discussions, and strengthening ties among historians, archivists, archaeologists and educational institutions.

They also called on the international community to join efforts to preserve historical memory and truth, strengthen peace, mutual respect and trust among peoples, and pass on the experience of peaceful cooperation to future generations. The statement declared the glorification of Nazism, fascism and other destructive ideologies unacceptable.

Dragon Media News Desk The leaders of eight Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) countries have pledged to work together to preserve historical memory and truth.
