It is an institution that questions public life, helps citizens understand the facts and holds those in power accountable. It has an important duty to give society a clear perspective on the country’s needs, national identity, freedom, territorial integrity, development and prosperity. Yet a large part of Nepali journalism appears more focused on daily political disputes, accusations and sensational events than on examining these questions in depth. As a result, journalism sometimes strengthens the promotion of entrenched interests when it should be expanding public awareness.

This criticism does not apply equally to every journalist or media organisation. Despite limited resources and considerable pressure, some journalists and institutions continue to produce factual, investigative and public-interest reporting. Their honest efforts, however, cannot conceal the structural problems affecting the wider sector. The central question is why such a wide gap has grown between journalism’s public responsibilities and the economic and political structures that shape its work.

One reason lies in media ownership and revenue. When a media organisation is tied to the interests of business groups, political forces or other powerful actors, its editorial independence can face direct or indirect pressure. Fear of losing advertising, access to government information or financial support may cause certain stories to be withheld, difficult questions to be softened or one side’s claims to be presented as fact. In such circumstances, journalism risks shifting its priorities away from the public interest and towards the financial security of the organisation and the interests of its owners.

Political polarisation has made the problem worse. Politics is not always treated simply as a subject of news; at times, the selection of stories, headlines, presentation and analysis can reflect political loyalties. When media outlets aligned with different sides present the same event in conflicting ways, citizens may find it easier to encounter interpretations that confirm their own positions than to establish the facts. This does not enrich public debate. It pushes society into a cycle of suspicion, anger and distrust.

Another problem is the emphasis on speed at the expense of investigation. In the race to publish quickly, the verification of claims, examination of context and effort to obtain responses from those concerned can all suffer. When material circulating on social media is turned into news without proper checks, falsehoods acquire the appearance of credibility. Presenting unverified allegations as facts, using inflammatory headlines and drawing conclusions from incomplete context are not minor journalistic errors. They can damage reputations, undermine the credibility of institutions and impair citizens’ ability to make informed decisions.

These problems do not arise solely from individual journalists’ negligence. Low pay, insecure employment, understaffed newsrooms, inadequate training and insufficient legal protection can force journalists to work in haste and under pressure. The lack of attention given to local needs across the country, the voices of marginalised communities and long-term development concerns is another consequence of this imbalance. Coverage centred on those in power, the capital and prominent figures can push aside questions closely connected to people’s daily lives, including education, health, employment, agriculture, infrastructure and local governance.

Journalism has an especially sensitive role in matters of national identity and territorial integrity. Supporting every government decision in the name of national interest is not journalism. Nor is it responsible to amplify the interests of external powers, unverified claims or domestic grievances without checking the facts. National identity is not a slogan exempt from scrutiny. It is a shared responsibility connected to citizens’ sovereign rights, territorial integrity, independent decision-making and the protection of democratic institutions. While examining the conduct of the state, journalism must also be able to question, with evidence, misinformation and interventionist tendencies that threaten the national interest.

When covering development and prosperity, journalism cannot stop at repeating project announcements or lists of government achievements. It must ask whom a plan is intended to serve, where the budget was spent, whether the work meets acceptable standards, who benefited and what outcomes citizens experienced. Such scrutiny can expose irregularities, put pressure on policymakers to correct failed policies and help identify successful practices. Journalism also has a responsibility to show people possible solutions and ways to ensure accountability, rather than leaving them with only frustration or anger.

To improve its performance, the media must make the relationships between ownership, advertising and editorial decisions more transparent. News and opinion should be clearly distinguished. Verification of claims, scrutiny of sources, responses from those concerned and the correction of errors must become established practices. The professional security, regular pay, skills development and legal protection of journalists should be priorities. Citizens, too, should develop the habit of asking about the sources, evidence and purpose behind the news they consume. Protecting media freedom does not mean exempting the media from accountability.

The criticism that Nepali journalism is becoming a vehicle for propaganda is serious. The answer, however, is not to place journalism under control. The answer is to strengthen freedom, transparency, evidence and public accountability. Journalism must stand with the country, but not with any party, government, owner or interest group. To stand with the country is to defend citizens’ right to know the truth, national independence, democratic values and the questions that can improve people’s lives. Only by rebuilding itself against these standards can Nepali journalism fulfil its duty to become the voice of the nation.

Journalism is more than a mirror of society.
