Corruption does more than drain the public treasury. It robs people of trust, young citizens of hope and the state of its credibility. Taking action against corruption is therefore not a favour granted by a government or a political party. It is a duty owed to the Constitution, the law and the people. Yet a persistent question remains: why do governments that promise a tough stand against corruption hesitate when it is time to act?<\/p>\n

The problem is often not a lack of laws but a lack of political will. Deals made to keep governments in power, protection within party structures, opaque election financing and alliances with centres of influence can reinforce networks of corruption. When an accused person is connected to a governing party, a powerful leader or an influential group, investigations may slow down. Files stop moving, investigative agencies come under pressure, and the public hears the same refrain: \u201cThe matter is under investigation.\u201d<\/p>\n

An investigation is not the same as justice. If a case is left pending for years in the name of inquiry, that is not justice; it is time granted to impunity. If the law becomes an instrument used only against the weak while the powerful are protected, the state loses its moral authority. An accusation alone does not establish guilt. But failing to investigate impartially, concealing evidence or allowing a case to collapse is a grave failure of the state.<\/p>\n

A government is tested not when it pursues its opponents, but when it applies the same standards to members of its own party and those close to it. If investigations target the opposition while complaints involving the government\u2019s own allies are ignored, an anti-corruption campaign becomes an instrument of political retaliation. Citizens expect impartiality: no one should escape accountability because of office, party, wealth or influence; no one should be declared guilty without evidence.<\/p>\n

Anti-corruption agencies must be independent and able to act without fear. As long as political interference shapes their appointments, resources and operations, powerful figures will continue to evade the law. The government must let investigators do their work impartially, ensure that prosecutions rest on evidence, and see that cases are resolved without undue delay. Recovering stolen public money, confiscating illicit assets and holding public officials accountable for abuse of office are equally important. Public arrests alone will not defeat corruption. Where guilt is established, there must be punishment\u2014and unlawful gains must be returned.<\/p>\n

Those in power must understand one thing: speeches against corruption will not ease public anger. Trust can be restored only through accountability. If action in a major case has stalled, the government should explain what legal obstacles exist, where the investigation stands and when a conclusion is expected. Silence and ambiguity deepen suspicion; transparency is essential to the state\u2019s credibility.<\/p>\n

Patriotism is not an emotion displayed only when the national flag is raised. Protecting public property, accounting for taxpayers\u2019 money and preventing the plunder of the state are acts of genuine loyalty to the country. A government that remains silent while money earned through people\u2019s labour is diverted to private interests cannot credibly call itself patriotic. If it cannot confront corruption that obstructs development, discourages capable citizens and places public services in the hands of a privileged few, its patriotic slogans will ring hollow.<\/p>\n

Acting against corruption requires courage\u2014but that courage must be demonstrated not in speeches, but in applying the law within one\u2019s own circle. If the government is afraid, the public is entitled to ask: What does it fear\u2014the law, the risk of losing power, or a powerful protector? That question cannot be avoided indefinitely. Only impartial investigations, timely prosecutions and punishment where guilt is proven can restore public confidence. Compromise with corruption is ultimately a compromise with the country\u2019s future. If the government truly stands with the country, it must now choose the law over power and influence.<\/p>\n
