No Nepali wishes India ill. Nepal naturally hopes that India will become prosperous, stable and powerful. But wishing India well does not mean compromising Nepal\u2019s national interests. Nepal\u2019s aspiration is straightforward: to maintain friendly relations with India while living with dignity as a sovereign, secure and developed nation.<\/p>\n

Nepal\u2019s Prime Minister Balendra Shah is scheduled to make a three-day official visit to India from November 22. The visit should be more than a formal occasion to repeat familiar commitments. It should be an opportunity to make tangible progress on issues of mutual interest.<\/p>\n

Nepal and India are closely connected by geography, history, culture, trade and movement between their people. This closeness creates opportunities, but the disparity in their size and capabilities also heightens sensitivities. A larger country may too easily treat a smaller neighbour\u2019s concerns as secondary; a smaller country, in turn, may risk interpreting every disagreement as hostility. Mature diplomacy avoids both tendencies. Friendship does not mean the absence of differences; it means resolving them through respect, dialogue and fair processes.<\/p>\n

India\u2019s ambition to become a major global power is no cause for concern in Nepal. Nepal\u2019s concern is not India\u2019s size or strength, but how that strength is used in its dealings with neighbours. A country earns true respect not by putting its neighbours under pressure, but by showing regard for their security and dignity. If India respects Nepal\u2019s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity in practice, its rise need not be a source of anxiety for Nepal; it can open up possibilities for regional cooperation.<\/p>\n

The central purpose of Prime Minister Shah\u2019s visit should therefore be to strengthen relations with India while clearly advancing Nepal\u2019s national interests. Good relations do not mean silent acquiescence or one-sided concessions. They must rest on open dialogue, predictable conduct, mutual respect and cooperation that benefits both countries. Nepal should present its priorities clearly and calmly. India, for its part, should not dismiss those concerns as the passing grievances of a smaller neighbour.<\/p>\n

Regular, results-oriented dialogue is needed on border management and outstanding boundary questions, trade and transit, energy, water resources and disaster response. If a decision or action causes hardship for Nepal, the issue should be addressed in a friendly and timely manner. Denying such problems or leaving them unresolved indefinitely deepens mistrust; working to resolve them strengthens friendship. Nepal, too, must put forward its concerns with evidence, clear policies and sustained diplomacy.<\/p>\n

National security is another foundation of this relationship. Nepal\u2019s security concerns are not a policy against India; they arise from its sovereign right to protect its territory, borders, citizens and freedom to make decisions. Security cooperation must be based on mutual understanding, trust and consent. A relationship in which each side understands the other\u2019s security sensitivities benefits both countries; one built on pressure or suspicion breeds insecurity.<\/p>\n

The success of the visit cannot be measured by the language of a joint statement alone. It will depend on whether agreed issues are given deadlines, responsible agencies and follow-up mechanisms; whether trade and transit problems are reduced; and whether energy and development projects move forward fairly. Nepal must also strengthen its own preparation, institutional coordination and continuity in diplomacy. National interests are defended effectively through clear policies and capable institutions.<\/p>\n

There is no need to turn Nepal\u2013India relations into a zero-sum contest. India\u2019s progress and Nepal\u2019s independence are not opposing goals. As India grows stronger, Nepal can advance as a secure, respected and prosperous neighbour\u2014if equality of sovereignty, trust and fairness are put into practice.<\/p>\n

Nepal wishes India well; it also seeks well-being and respect for itself. That sentiment should be clear during the Prime Minister\u2019s visit: friendship should deepen, cooperation should expand, and Nepal should be recognised as a sovereign nation with the right to choose its own path.<\/p>\n
