Madan Regmi Urges Government to Remain Firm on ‘One China Policy’ Amid Rise in “Free Tibet” Activities

Kathmandu, October 14.
Madan Regmi, Chairman of the China Study Center, has drawn the attention of the Nepal Army and the Zen-Z backed government of Prime Minister Sushila Karki to the recent surge in anti-China and “Free Tibet” activities during the September 8–9 Zen-Z agitation.
In a formal statement, Regmi warned that such violent and politically motivated Tibetan outfits pose a serious challenge to Nepal’s law and order, as well as to the fundamental right of the Nepali people to live peacefully. He urged the government to remain sincere and committed to the One China Policy, which has consistently been adopted and followed by all previous governments of Nepal.

“These anti-China and ‘Free Tibet’ activities are not only against the long-standing Nepal–China friendship but also threaten the stability of our society,” Regmi stated, adding that the government must ensure such elements are not encouraged or supported from within Nepal.
Referring to a recent message of congratulations sent by the exiled Tibetan monk, the Dalai Lama, to Prime Minister Sushila Karki on her appointment, Regmi noted that this coincided with an upsurge in “Free Tibet” activities in Nepal. “In this context, the government should clearly define its position regarding the Dalai Lama and related political movements operating from abroad,” he said.
Regmi further emphasized that maintaining and upholding the One China Policy is vital for Nepal’s long-term national interest, peace, and regional stability. He reiterated that Nepal must refrain from allowing its soil to be used for any activities that interfere in China’s internal affairs, stating, “The current government has a historical responsibility to safeguard Nepal’s sovereignty and to protect the nation’s balanced and friendly relations with China.”
