Russia and Iran Discuss Implementation of Strategic Partnership

Moscow, December 17. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has begun bilateral talks here with a delegation led by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, initiating discussions on foreign policy coordination and the implementation of strategic partnership.

At the outset of the talks, Lavrov welcomed the Iranian delegation to Moscow and noted that this marks their fifth high-level meeting this year. He also mentioned that a plan for inter-ministerial consultations between the two countries for 2026–2028 would be signed.

Lavrov stated that relations have entered a historic phase following the signing and implementation of the 20-year Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty this year. He recalled that the objectives outlined in this treaty were discussed during the recent meeting between President Vladimir Putin and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in Ashgabat.

Today’s talks are expected to focus significantly on enhancing cooperation regarding Iran’s nuclear programme, the situation in the Middle East (particularly in the Palestinian territories), and other regional and international issues.

Lavrov expressed satisfaction with the regular, trust-based dialogue between the leaders of the two countries, conducted in a “spirit of openness and comradeship.” Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi began his visit by delivering a lecture at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO), which Lavrov highlighted as an important example of bilateral educational exchange.

Through this meeting, Russia and Iran are expected to strengthen their shared stance on regional stability and multilateral issues.
