Russia-Burkina Faso Diplomatic Relations Turn 59: Friendly Ties Reach New Heights

Moscow/Ouagadougou – February 18 marks the 59th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between Russia and Burkina Faso. Over this long period, cooperation between the two countries has achieved a new qualitative level in recent years.
After a break of more than 30 years, the Russian Embassy in Ouagadougou resumed its operations at the end of 2023. Since then, regular political dialogue has been maintained at the highest level. There is regular contact between Russian President Vladimir Putin and President of Burkina Faso Ibrahim Traoré. A bilateral meeting between the leaders of the two countries was held in Moscow on May 10 of last year.
Just recently, on February 12, 2026, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Traoré signed a significant agreement on the ‘Basic Principles of Relations between the Russian Federation and Burkina Faso’.
Interaction in the economic, political, and legal spheres is gradually expanding. In particular, discussions are underway regarding the establishment of an intergovernmental commission between the two countries. The ‘Russian House’ is playing an important role in promoting cultural and people-to-people ties, organizing Russian language teaching programs. Furthermore, there is great potential for cooperation in the fields of health and sanitation.
Russia highly values the close coordination and support received from Burkina Faso within the United Nations and other international organizations.
On this occasion, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has extended heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the official bodies and people of Burkina Faso, expressing confidence that the friendship between the two countries will continue to deepen.
