Russia-Cuba Unity on Fidel Castro’s Centenary: ‘We Stand With You in Your Struggle’

Moscow, February 18: Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing the historic special relationship with Cuba, has stated that Moscow will provide full support to Havana even in this time of new sanctions. During a meeting in Moscow with Cuba’s Foreign Minister and Presidential Special Envoy Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, Putin reaffirmed Russia’s steadfast commitment to the Cuban people and government.

The Russian President said, “There is a special relationship between our countries, established historically. We have always stood by Cuba in her struggle for independence and the right to choose her own path.”

Highly praising the Cuban people’s decades-long struggle to defend their national interests and freedom, Putin stated, “Now new sanctions are being imposed. You know our position on such matters. We will not tolerate anything of that sort. Our Foreign Ministry’s stance is open, clear, and unambiguous.”

Noting that bilateral relations are progressing in a positive direction, the Russian President also proposed jointly celebrating the centenary of Cuban revolutionary leader Fidel Castro this year. He said, “This year marks Fidel Castro’s centenary; we will celebrate it together.”

It was stated that during the meeting, discussions were held with the Cuban Foreign Minister on further deepening bilateral cooperation in the days ahead.
