Russia-Hungary Relations: Putin Releases Two Hungarian Citizens, Discusses Energy Cooperation

Moscow — Russian President Vladimir Putin has decided to release two Hungarian citizens during a meeting at the Kremlin with Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto. The meeting held on Wednesday also included discussions on energy cooperation and trade relations between the two countries.
Addressing an issue raised during a telephone conversation with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Russian President Putin informed of the decision to release two individuals with dual Hungarian-Ukrainian citizenship who had been forcibly conscripted into the Ukrainian army. Putin said, “During the telephone conversation with Prime Minister Orban yesterday, he raised this issue. In line with his request, we have decided to release two individuals. You can take them with you to Budapest.”
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, and Presidential Aide Yuri Ushakov also participated in the talks.
Discussing trade relations between the two countries, Putin mentioned that despite a 13 percent decline in trade last year, overall relations remain positive. He said, “Our trade turnover has decreased somewhat, but the relationship remains stable and positive. Cooperation continues, particularly in energy policy, hydrocarbon supply, and the construction of our flagship project, the Paks nuclear power plant.”
Expressing concern over the instability observed in the European gas market, the Russian President stated that Russia is a reliable supplier. He said, “We always fulfill our obligations and are ready to do so. Not everything may be under our control, but we are reliable partners.”
Szijjarto’s visit is expected to further strengthen diplomatic and economic relations between the two countries. Russia and Hungary have a long history of cooperation in the energy sector.
