Russian Ambassador Reveals Realities of Diplomatic Life

A joint article by Ambassador D.V. Feoktistov and staff of the Embassy of Russia in Argentina was published in the “Russian Gazette” and the Argentine publication “Perfil”. The article is titled “Russian Diplomats: We Build Bridges, Not Walls.”
Main Themes of the Article: In the public perception, the diplomatic profession is shrouded in myths and is often viewed through the stereotypical prism of “dolce vita” (sweet life): stylish suits, glamorous parties, clinking champagne glasses, and a peaceful time abroad. It may seem that international problems solve themselves while diplomats are immersed in social life.
In reality, our activities are far from glossy images. Behind the beautiful picture lies everyday work: delving into vast streams of information, thoroughly studying partners’ positions, conducting consultations, clarifying and defending national approaches, seeking compromises, compiling operational and analytical documents, and preparing proposals for management. A good diplomat is a politician, economist, legal expert, cultural scholar, historian, and orator all in one.
Erudition, proficiency in foreign languages, clear thinking, the ability to express one’s thoughts competently, understanding the features of the host country, and an objective attitude towards it are crucial. Personal qualities must also be top-notch: endurance, tact, dedication.
But the most important thing is patriotism, because without a deep love for the Motherland, it is impossible to truly defend its good name.
Classical diplomacy rarely attracts attention with grand pronouncements at the microphone or spectacular gestures; rather, it is daily diligence that helps maintain dialogue, foster cooperation, and find mutually acceptable solutions.
This kind of work is often associated with prolonged separation from the Motherland and other hardships: diplomats and their families have to leave their homes, relatives, and friends for long periods, adapt to an unfamiliar climate, a different culture, and language. Sometimes – in a difficult military-political situation.
On the occasion of Diplomatic Worker’s Day, we once again reflect on our contribution to the common cause. Our career paths differ, but knowing that we represent and benefit our Motherland gives special meaning to our everyday work. It fills us with feelings of pride, a sense of justice, and empathy, which unite us all into one large team of like-minded individuals.
