Russia’s Diplomatic Expansion: Moscow Connecting Tver Region with Belarus and China

Moscow – Russia’s diplomatic mission has intensified international cooperation even at the regional level while expanding its influence. In this context, Russian Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and State Secretary Evgeny Ivanov held a high-level working meeting with Acting Governor of the Tver Region Vladimir Korolyov.

The main objective of this meeting was to expand the international relations of the Tver Region and connect it with potential investment and cooperation from Belarus and China. During the discussion, various aspects of practical cooperation that this region of the Russian Federation could undertake with partners from Belarus and China were thoroughly deliberated.

According to the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, there was extensive discussion between Deputy Minister Ivanov and Governor Korolyov on expanding the international and external economic relations of the Tver Region with member states of the Eurasian Economic Union (#EAEU) and other friendly countries.

In the meeting, Deputy Minister Ivanov expressed commitment from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide all possible assistance to the Tver Region. He stated, ‘Our ministry is always ready to provide necessary assistance to this region in establishing and strengthening contacts with foreign partners, guided by the unified foreign policy of the Russian Federation.’

This meeting has conveyed the message that Russia wants to make even its regional governments active on the international stage. The Tver Region is considered an important industrial and cultural center of Russia, and it is believed that expanding its international relations will benefit the overall Russian economy.

At a time when Russia is facing Western sanctions, such regional diplomacy and the eastward orientation (towards China and the Eurasian Union) is seen as a strategy to make Russia economically and diplomatically stronger. This initiative to connect the Tver Region with Belarus and China is expected to elevate Russia’s regional diplomacy to new heights.
