SCO Expresses Deep Concern Over Iran Situation: Rejects External Interference, Calls for Peaceful Resolution

Kathmandu — The Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) has expressed deep concern over the recent tragic incidents in the Islamic Republic of Iran, calling for a peaceful political and diplomatic resolution to the situation. In an official statement issued on January 16, 2026, the SCO noted that the incidents resulted in the loss of lives of civilians and law enforcement personnel, as well as damage to civilian infrastructure.

The SCO conveyed its profound condolences to the people and the Government of Iran, warning that such incidents could have serious implications for regional stability and peace. In view of the increasingly complex situation within Iran, the organisation urged all parties to exercise restraint and give priority to dialogue.

In its statement, the SCO pointed out that unilateral sanctions imposed on Iran have had a serious negative impact on the country’s economic stability. According to the organisation, these sanctions have led to a decline in living standards, constrained socio-economic development efforts, and created obstacles to the implementation of the government’s development-oriented policies.

The SCO strongly opposed any form of external interference in the internal affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, reaffirming that respect for sovereignty, independence, and territorial integrity is a fundamental principle of international relations.

Stressing that the use of force or the threat of force is unacceptable in international affairs, the SCO emphasised that the current crisis should be addressed not through violence, but through political dialogue and diplomatic initiatives as the only viable path forward.

Analysts say the SCO’s statement reflects the firm commitment of regional organisations to peace, dialogue, and respect for international law in dealing with sensitive global situations. The position taken on Iran is also seen as a broader message underscoring the indispensability of respecting the sovereignty of all states—large and small alike—in an increasingly multipolar world.
