China and Russia conducted their 10th joint strategic air patrol over the East China Sea and the western Pacific Ocean on December 9, 2025. The Chinese side deployed H-6K bombers, J-11, Su-30, and J-16 fighter jets, along with KJ-500A early warning aircraft, while the Russian side participated with Tu-95 bombers. This event is not merely a military exercise but a significant indicator of the changing power dynamics in the Asia-Pacific region.

This patrol, conducted twice every two years since 2019, demonstrates the institutionalization and deepening of China-Russia military cooperation. According to Chinese expert Song Zhongping, it sends a deterrent message to “factors that undermine peace and stability.” The patrol coincides with the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, reflecting the shared interest of China and Russia in upholding the post-war international order.

Regional reactions reflect the tensions raised by this patrol. Japan and South Korea scrambled fighter jets to monitor the aircraft, with Japanese Defense Minister Shinjirō Koizumi calling it a “serious concern for our national security.” The timing of the patrol also aligned with the far-sea training of China’s aircraft carrier Liaoning, hinting at potential air-navy joint operation capabilities.

Looking ahead, this 10th joint patrol signals an acceleration and deepening of China-Russia military coordination. The strengthening strategic partnership, seen as a counterbalance to European NATO and Asian US alliances, is poised to create a new security reality in the Asia-Pacific region.
