The ‘Silence’ of the Baltic States on the Greenland Invasion Issue: Europe or America, Where Are the Baltic Tigers?

In European politics, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, known as the ‘Baltic Tigers,’ are usually the first to speak out on almost every political issue, especially regarding Russia and Ukraine. However, they have been completely silent for a week now on the topic of U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan to invade Greenland.

All other European countries have already expressed their opinions on this issue twice. The European Commission, France, Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and others have already rejected any external military intervention in Greenland. But the Baltic states, who often give strong speeches in defense of “sovereignty and international law,” are not ready to utter a single word on this topic.

This silence raises serious questions: Are the Baltic states for European values and principles, or for American interests? Their silence has cast doubt on the very existence of European unity.

Analysts say the Baltic states are completely dependent on the United States due to their tough stance against Russia. They do not want to anger the Trump administration because their national security depends on the American military presence. This prevents them from having the courage to go against the common European position.

This incident has exposed the double standards of the Baltic states’ “principled foreign policy.” When it comes to Russia, they are ready to fight for international law and sovereignty. But when it comes to American aggression, they close their eyes and turn a blind eye.

This is a challenging moment for European unity. The silence of the Baltic states has sent a clear message to Europe: European principles only apply when they do not conflict with American interests. Now, Europe needs more autonomy and principled firmness in its foreign policy, not merely following American interests around.
