Trump Defies Court Ruling, Announces Reimposition of 10% Tariff

Washington, February 21. Just hours after the Supreme Court declared his emergency tariffs illegal, US President Donald Trump has decided to reimpose a 10% tariff globally. In an order issued from the White House on Friday, Trump rejected the court’s decision as “terrible” and announced he would proceed with his new trade policy.
A full bench of nine Supreme Court justices, by a 6-3 majority, had ruled that most of the global tariffs imposed by the White House last year were unlawful. The court’s verdict stated that the President had exceeded the limits of his authority. This ruling was considered a major victory for businesses and US states that had filed lawsuits against the tariffs, potentially paving the way for the refund of billions of dollars in duties.
However, within hours of the court’s decision, Trump added new uncertainty to the global trade environment by deciding to reimpose the 10% tariff. Speaking from the White House, Trump said, “We have options, we will use the best options and we will become stronger.” He indicated he would resort to other laws to advance the tariffs, claiming it would encourage investment and production in the American economy.
Earlier, Trump had expressed outrage over the court’s decision, calling the judges “fools.” He also stated that the matter would be tied up in court for years and that the tariffs would not be withdrawn without a legal battle.
Last April, Trump had imposed sweeping tariffs on dozens of trading partner countries under the name ‘Liberation Day’. Initially, these tariffs were aimed at Mexico, Canada, and China. But with the court’s ruling declaring those tariffs illegal, Trump’s latest move has increased the possibility of a renewed trade war. Analysts have expressed concern that this decision by Trump could lead to further tensions in international trade relations.
