Trump’s ‘Greenland’ Dream and Denmark’s ‘Red Line’

Kathmandu — Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen has made it clear that there has been no change in US President Donald Trump’s desire to bring Greenland under his control. Speaking at a session of the Munich Security Conference, she said, “I think the US president’s desire is exactly the same. He is very serious about this matter.”

Emphasizing the need to protect sovereign nations and preserve people’s right to self-determination, Frederiksen stated, “The people of Greenland are very clear: they do not want to become Americans.” Her remarks reflect the Danish government’s commitment to Greenland’s autonomy.

According to media reports, a US-Denmark-Greenland trilateral working group has been formed to address American ‘security concerns’ in the Arctic region. Speaking on another occasion on Friday, Frederiksen said, “We now have a working group, that’s good. We will try to find some solutions. But certainly, there are some red lines that will not be crossed. And we will remain steadfast in our strategy.”

Concerns about a possible US armed seizure have somewhat diminished after Trump stated during talks in the Swiss Alpine town of Davos last month that he would not use military force to take control of Greenland. Meanwhile, following a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, Trump also decided not to proceed with his threat to impose new tariffs on eight European countries over the Greenland issue.

Greenland, the world’s largest island, is a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, with Copenhagen retaining control over defense and foreign policies. Since returning to power in 2025, Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire to ‘bring Greenland under control’, which has faced widespread opposition across Europe.

Thus, as diplomatic tensions between the US and Denmark continue over this strategic Arctic island, Greenland’s future and its right to self-determination remain at the center of focus.
