Ukraine’s Impatience at the EU’s Doorstep: Membership Date Uncertain

Munich, Falgun 4: The member states of the European Union (EU) do not appear ready to give any concrete date for Ukraine’s membership, according to Kaja Kallas, Vice-President of the European Commission and High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. Speaking at the 62nd Munich Security Conference on Sunday, she clarified that much work still remains in Ukraine’s membership process.

“There’s a lot of work to be done,” Kallas said. Adding further, she stated, “In the end, it’s always the geopolitical picture that shapes such decisions.” Her remarks indicate that Ukraine’s EU membership will depend on future geopolitical developments.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky recently urged the EU to set a specific date for Ukraine to formally join the Union. Ukraine was granted candidate status for EU membership in June 2022. Following the Russian invasion, Ukraine has been pressing to rapidly advance the EU membership process.

The Munich Security Conference is a globally prestigious security forum, where world leaders gather to discuss issues related to security, defense, and international relations. Key topics raised at this year’s conference include the Russia-Ukraine war, European security, and EU enlargement.

Kallas’s comments suggest that uncertainty persists regarding the prospect of Ukraine’s EU membership. Although the EU continues to provide political and economic support to Ukraine, this indicates that full membership may still be a distant journey.
