US Special Envoy Gor Meets Foreign and Finance Ministers, Talks with Prime Minister Remain Uncertain

Kathmandu — US President Donald Trump’s Special Envoy and Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, who is on a visit to Nepal, began his political engagements on Friday. Having landed in Kathmandu on Thursday evening, he met separately with Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal and Finance Minister Dr. Swarnim Wagle on Friday.
The delegation-level talks held at the Foreign Ministry focused on strengthening bilateral ties with an emphasis on investment and trade promotion. Gor is said to have also requested a meeting with Prime Minister Balen Shah, but no time has been confirmed as yet. Earlier, US Assistant Secretary of State Sameer Paul Kapur was also unable to secure a meeting with Prime Minister Shah.
Leading a six-member delegation, Gor arrived from New Delhi on a Nepal Airlines flight, accompanied by Major General Patrick A. Tighe, Defence Attaché at the US Embassy in New Delhi. The identities of the remaining four members have not been disclosed. Visits by high-ranking US officials to Nepal have become increasingly frequent in recent times. Meanwhile, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri is also scheduled to visit Kathmandu during the last week of Baisakh.
