Russian Ambassador-Designate Visits Russian House in Kathmandu

KATHMANDU, May 7 – Ambassador-Designate of the Russian Federation to Nepal, Alexey Vladimirovich Surovtsev, paid his first visit to the Russian House in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

During the visit, Mr. Surovtsev reviewed the current activities of the Rossotrudnichestvo representation in Nepal. He highly commended the team’s preparations for the upcoming Victory Day celebrations and expressed gratitude for their professionalism. He also urged the staff to further develop Russian-Nepalese cultural and scientific cooperation and to implement new initiatives that strengthen ties between the two nations.

Mr. Surovtsev was appointed as Ambassador to Nepal by Russian President Vladimir Putin through Decree No. 239 on April 10, 2026. He succeeds Alexey Novikov, who completed his assignment in October 2025.

Born in 1961, Surovtsev graduated from the Moscow State Institute of International Relations (MGIMO) of the USSR Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1985. Fluent in English and Hindi, he joined the diplomatic service the same year and has since held various positions both at the ministry’s central office and abroad.

His previous postings include serving as Counsellor at the Permanent Mission of Russia to the UN Office in Geneva (2005–2010), Senior Counsellor and later Head of Department in the North America Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry (2010–2013), and Consul General of Russia in Mumbai (2018–2024). From November 2024 until his appointment as ambassador, he served as Deputy Director of the Second Asia Department, overseeing relations with Nepal, Bangladesh, the Maldives, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
