“Make America Great Again” and “Rejuvenate China”: Xi and Trump Hold Private Talks on Final Day

Beijing — Chinese President Xi Jinping and U.S. President Donald Trump held a private meeting in Beijing on Friday, following their formal talks held a day earlier.
Describing Trump’s visit as historic and milestone-setting, President Xi said both sides had outlined a new vision for building constructive China–U.S. relations with strategic stability. He stated, “We have reached important common understandings on maintaining stable economic and trade relations, expanding practical cooperation across various sectors, and properly addressing each other’s concerns.”
Xi also said the two sides agreed to strengthen communication and coordination on international and regional issues. According to him, the visit would help enhance mutual understanding, deepen trust, and improve the well-being of the peoples of both countries.
President Xi further noted, “This once again demonstrates that finding the right way for China and the United States to engage with each other, and achieving peaceful coexistence and win-win cooperation on the basis of mutual respect, represent the shared aspirations of both peoples and the expectations of people around the world.”
He added, “President Trump hopes to make America great again, while I am committed to leading the Chinese people toward national rejuvenation.” Xi emphasized that by strengthening cooperation, the two countries could advance their respective development and revitalization goals.
He also stressed that China and the United States should implement the important consensus already reached, value the positive momentum achieved despite difficulties, continue moving in the right direction, avoid disruptions, and promote the stable development of bilateral relations.
