A Special Recollection from the Russian Embassy in Nepal: Tea with Rustam Nabiev, Who Climbed Everest on His Hands

Kathmandu. The Russian Embassy in Nepal has shared a touching recollection through its social media, drawing attention to the story of a remarkable Russian citizen who recently climbed Mount Everest.
The Embassy wrote, “One pleasant feature of our diplomatic mission in Nepal is that the Himalayas attract summit conquerors and fascinating personalities from all over the world. Among them are many of our extraordinary compatriots. We make full use of the opportunity to speak with climbers.”
According to the Embassy, about a month and a half ago, it had handed over the Victory Banner and a flag marking the “70 Years of Russia-Nepal Diplomatic Relations” to Alexander Abramov’s team. Photographs later showed both flags proudly flying on the summit of Everest. On Wednesday, the flags were returned to the Embassy, which said they would now be preserved as historic memorabilia.

Who Is Rustam Nabiev?
The Embassy’s main focus, however, was on a special guest who had come for tea the previous day: Rustam Nabiev.
In July 2015, when the barracks of an airborne military training center in Omsk collapsed, Rustam fell from the second floor to the first. As the ceiling came down over him, he remained trapped under the rubble for a long time. His life was saved, but he lost both of his legs.
A young man from a poor family, suddenly left without both legs—what kind of future could he have imagined? How many people in his place would have been able to remain unbroken? The Embassy wrote, “His path was difficult. We will not go into the details. But in brief, this man reached the summit of Everest on May 20 — on his hands.”
The Embassy added, “Can you imagine that? He did it.”
Ordinary in Appearance, Extraordinary in Deeds
According to the Embassy, the conversation with Rustam did not involve grand words.
“Because sometimes it is difficult for words to do justice to a warrior of the human spirit. But now, several hours later, we feel that we should have said it louder,” the Embassy stated.
“In front of us stood, outwardly, an ordinary and humble man. Outwardly only. Because what truly makes us extraordinary is our deeds. Rustam has accomplished many such deeds. We want to thank him for them. We want everyone to know about Rustam.”
The Embassy also encouraged everyone to search Rustam’s name online and learn more about his life story.
