Mahabir Pun Set to Become Science and Technology Minister

Kathmandu — Preparations are underway to appoint lawmaker Mahabir Pun as Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation.

According to sources, the government led by Prime Minister Balendra Shah is preparing to assign Pun the responsibility of the ministry. Preparations are reportedly being made to administer the oath of office and secrecy to him at 3 p.m. today.

Pun, who is also the founder of the National Innovation Center, has long been active in the fields of science, technology, research and innovation. He is widely known for his work in promoting rural technology, domestic research, and young scientists and innovators.

An independent lawmaker, Pun had earlier served as education minister in the government led by then Prime Minister Sushila Karki.

Meanwhile, former Home Minister Sudan Gurung, who had resigned after questions were raised about his asset details, is set to return to the Home Ministry. Prime Minister Shah is preparing to appoint Gurung as Home Minister today, according to sources.

Gurung is also expected to take the oath at 3 p.m. today.

With the planned appointment of Mahabir Pun as Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation and the return of Sudan Gurung to the Home Ministry, the government appears to be moving forward with Cabinet expansion and reshuffle.
