Time Has Shown the Need for Left Unity, Says Khanal

Senior leader of the Nepali Communist Party, Jhalanath Khanal, has said that unity among leftist forces has become necessary to transform society.

Speaking at a program organized by the Madan Bhandari Foundation on Sunday, Khanal said the country’s leftist and communist revolutionary forces must come together to bring social change.

“This society must be transformed. For that, the leftists and communist revolutionaries of this country must be united,” Khanal said. “But during the past period, sometimes horns grew on us, sometimes crests grew, and sometimes many other things appeared. Because of that, we could not remain united.”

Through the expression, Khanal referred to arrogance, internal rivalry and divisions among leftist leaders, saying such tendencies had weakened the left movement.

He said the political situation had now begun to push leftist forces toward unity once again. According to Khanal, the present circumstances and the demands of the time have made it necessary for leftist parties to move beyond division and work together.

“Now time has started to shake us awake, and circumstances have started placing us in a situation of compulsion,” he said. “Because of that, today we leftists are again moving toward unity. At least in today’s discussion program, we became united.”

Khanal described left unity as a major need of the present time. During the program, he also asked participants in the hall to raise slogans in favor of left unity.

He said that unity among leftist forces should not be guided only by party interests, but should be focused on social transformation and fulfilling the expectations of the people.

Khanal also said the left movement should learn from past weaknesses and move forward through cooperation, common purpose and ideological clarity.
